The global energy transition is introducing unprecedented operational complexities to power systems, characterized by the large-scale integration of variable renewable energy and the emergence of gigawatt-scale, intermittent loads. Drawing on recent Brazilian experience, this presentation examines the evolving landscape of system operation, highlighting the critical role of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in mitigating the "duck curve" and the necessity for coordinated Transmission and Distribution (T&D) management. A significant focus is placed on the future of HVDC technology, detailing Brazil’s shift toward mandatory VSC-MMC technology for upcoming interconnections and the technical specifications for high-power, bi-directional converters. Furthermore, the report addresses the dual challenges posed by the hydrogen economy and AI-driven Data Centers, which introduce new layers of uncertainty regarding grid stability. The discussion concludes by emphasizing the industry's need for robust information sharing through platforms like CIGRE and advocating for greater clarity in the international application of advanced HVDC technologies.

马尔西奥·塞赫特曼教授是高压直流(HVDC)输电和电力系统规划领域的世界知名专家。

他拥有巴西圣保罗大学电气工程硕士和学士学位。凭借超过40年的工作经验,他曾担任巴西电力研究中心(Cepel)总干事、巴西电力公司(Eletrobras)首席输电官,以及国际大电网会议(CIGRE)技术委员会主席(2018–2024)。 塞赫特曼先生曾主导或参与指导了巴西、印度及多个海外具有里程碑意义的高压直流项目,例如里约马代拉和贝洛蒙特输电系统。

他是IEEE终身会士,荣获CIGRE金奖和Uno Lamm高压直流奖,发表技术论文逾150篇,积极推动电力工程领域的国际合作。

自2024年起,他担任怀柔国家实验室和华为能源业务部的技术顾问,并持续与清华大学及全球能源界保持紧密合作,推进新一代输电技术的研究与发展。

Prof. Marcio Szechtman is a world-renowned expert in High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission and power system planning.

He holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. With over 40 years of experience, he has held leadership roles including Director General of Cepel, Chief Transmission Officer of Eletrobras, and Technical Council Chair of CIGRE (2018–2024).

Mr. Szechtman has led or advised on landmark HVDC projects in Brazil, India, and beyond, such as the Rio Madeira and Belo Monte transmission systems. An IEEE Life Fellow and recipient of the CIGRE Gold Medal and Uno Lamm HVDC Award, he has published over 150 technical papers and actively promotes international collaboration in power engineering.

Since 2024, he has been a technical advisor to Huarong National Laboratory and Huawei Power Energy BU, and continues to advance research on next-generation transmission technologies through close cooperation with Tsinghua University and the global energy community.
