Recently, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power & Energy Society (PES) announced the 2025 Society-Level Awards. Wang Yi, a 2014 doctoral alumnus of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University and assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong, was awarded the IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award. The award committee’s citation recognized him “for contributions to data analytics and forecasting in smart distribution grids.” Dr. Wang Yi is the first recipient from the Asia-Pacific region and China (including Mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) since the award was established in 1988.

2025 IEEE PES Society-Level Awards Announced on IEEE PES Official Website

Dr. Wang Yi graduated with a bachelor's degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2014, and the same year enrolled at Tsinghua University directly for his PhD under Professor Kang Chongqing. After graduating in 2019, he conducted postdoctoral research at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Since 2021, he has been an assistant professor at the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Wang’s research focuses on big data analytics for smart distribution and utilization of electricity, conducting cutting-edge and interdisciplinary theoretical methods and key technologies. His work supports analysis, forecasting, and decision-making in distribution systems, contributing to the digital intelligence and decarbonization transformation of power and energy systems. This award is a high recognition from IEEE PES of Dr. Wang’s scientific achievements in the smart distribution grid field.

About the IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award:

The IEEE PES Society-Level Awards represent the highest honors in the academic field of power systems under IEEE. The Outstanding Young Engineer Award (formerly the Walter Fee Outstanding Young Engineer Award) was established in 1988 to recognize members under the age of 35 who have demonstrated outstanding leadership or made notable engineering contributions in the Power & Energy Society. The award is presented at the IEEE PES General Meeting. Until 2023, only one recipient was selected annually worldwide (with two recipients in 2024).
