The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the earliest doctoral and master's degrees conferring units in electrical engineering in China. It has always attached great importance to the training of postgraduates. The training of postgraduates (including master's and doctor's) is not only the focus of personnel training, but also an important guarantee for the successful completion of the scientific research work of the whole Department.

In the three first-level discipline evaluations organized by the Ministry of Education respectively in 2003, 2006 and 2012, the electrical engineering discipline of the Department ranked first; it is rated as A+ of the electrical engineering discipline in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation in 2016.

All five second-level disciplines—"Electric Power System and Automation", "High Voltage and Insulation Technology", "Electrical Machinery and Electrical Appliances", "Electrical Theory and New Technology", "Power Electronics and Electric Drive" under the first-level disciplines of Department of Electrical Engineering are the first master's and doctoral degrees conferring units in China, and the first four doctoral units are rated as key disciplines in three national key discipline evaluations in China respectively in 1989, 2002 and 2006. In 2007, the electrical engineering discipline of the Department became the first batch of national key first-level disciplines. In 2010, the Department completed the International Assessment of Electrical Engineering Discipline. The field assessment expert group headed by Anjan Bose, a member of the American National Academy of Engineering, recognized that "most of the research groups in this department are considered internationally excellent".
