Topic: Modeling and Control of Renewable Power Transmission:From the European System to the Detailed Level

Valid models are of fundamental importance for the research and development of next-generation power systems with highly integrated renewable energy sources. The models provide the basis for planning, optimization, and dynamic control. In this presentation, various stages of modeling that are critical for the integration of renewables are presented. The first stage concerns the planning. The planning model is based on the outcome of the European Union’s project eHighway2050. We show how the corridors of the future European power grid are designed in accordance with the European Union’s climate objectives. Secondly, a method for the multiscale modeling of electric power systems to cover the different timescales of transients is desirable. Instead of using just instantaneous real signals to track the AC voltages and currents, the latter are modeled through analytic signals that also comprise orthogonal imaginary parts. Thanks to this extension, the Fourier spectra of the analytic signals can be shifted in the frequency domain so that they become dynamic phasors. The methodology proposed so uses analytic signals to bridge the merits of instantaneous and phasor signals. It thus enables the efficient simulation of diverse waveforms. Thirdly, a method for the transfer function based modeling offering an in-depth insight into the systemic behavior of wind energy conversion systems (WECS) is developed. It readily supports the design of maximum power point tracking. In sum, the presentation points to key selected challenges and gives modeling solutions needed in the process of transforming the energy system.

About the speaker:

Dr. Kai Strunz graduated with the Dr.-Ing. degree with summa cum laude from Saarland University, Germany, in 2001. From 1995 to 1997, he pursued research at Brunel University in London. From 1997 to 2002, Dr. Strunz worked at the Division Recherche et D茅veloppement of Electricit茅 de France (EDF) in the Paris area. From 2002 to 2007, he was tenure-track Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle. Since September 2007, he has been Professor and holder of the chair of Sustainable Electric Networks and Sources of Energy (SENSE) at TU Berlin. He is Guest Professor with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing.

Dr. Strunz is recipient of the IEEE PES Prize Paper Award 2015 and the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics First Prize Paper Award 2015. He received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award of the USA in 2003. Kai Strunz obtained the Outstanding Teaching Award of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington in 2004.?

Professor Strunz was General and Technical Program Chair of the conference IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT) Europe 2012. He is Secretary of the IEEE PES (Power & Energy Society) Committee on Energy Development and Power Generation and Chairman of the IEEE PES Subcommittee on Distributed Energy Resources. He co-manages the operation of the Power-Globe email forum. Dr. Strunz is co-founding editor of the open access Journal of Engineering launched by IET in 2013. Further editorial board memberships include CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems since 2015, IET Renewable Power Generation 2007 to 2017, IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics 2006 to 2010, and IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics 2013 to 2014. He acted as a Review Editor for the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) from 2009 to 2011.
