On the morning of June 29, Professor Jovica Milanovic of the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University. The appointment ceremony was held at the Department of Electrical Engineering. More than 30 faculty members and students, including Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Sun Kai, Deputy Dean of the Department; and Associate Professor Zhang Ning, attended the ceremony. The ceremony was chaired by Sun Kai.

Appointment Ceremony
At the ceremony, Sun Kai introduced Professor Jovica Milanovic’s academic career and experience in industry–academia–research collaboration, as well as his outstanding achievements in power system dynamic modeling, grid stability assessment, and related fields. On behalf of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Kang Chongqing extended his warm congratulations to Professor Jovica Milanovic on his appointment as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University and expressed his sincere appreciation for Professor Milanovic’s close collaboration with the department and strong support over the years. He noted that the department hoped to take this appointment as an opportunity to further deepen engagement in joint research, collaborative training of young scholars, and high-level international academic exchange, and to work together to address key technological challenges facing new power systems. Professor Jovica Milanovic expressed his sincere appreciation to Tsinghua University for its recognition and appointment. He noted that China’s new power system has broad prospects for development and expressed his hope of continuing, in his capacity as a Distinguished Visiting Professor, to engage in academic discussions and joint research projects with faculty and students of the Department of Electrical Engineering, jointly produce high-level research achievement, and contribute to the continued development of Tsinghua University and the department.

Kang Chongqing Presents the Appointment Certificate to Professor Jovica Milanovic
During the academic presentation, Professor Jovica Milanovic drew on practical experience from the transformation of power grids worldwide to provide a systematic overview of his team’s latest research on new power systems. He also offered an in-depth yet accessible discussion of key challenges facing new power systems, multidimensional approaches to grid stability assessment, and coordinated decoupling technologies for transmission and distribution networks. Grounded in rigorous theory and supported by extensive case studies, the presentation combined academic depth with strong engineering relevance. Faculty members and students in attendance listened attentively and gained valuable insights. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which faculty members and students engaged in extensive discussions with Professor Jovica Milanovic on issues including probabilistic modeling of uncertainties in power systems and coordination between transmission and distribution networks. The session featured a lively and stimulating academic atmosphere.

About the Speaker
Professor Jovica Milanovic holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia, a PhD from the University of Newcastle in Australia, and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. He has served as Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, Visiting Professor at the University of Novi Sad and the University of Belgrade in Serbia, and Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland in Australia. His research focuses on power system modeling, operation, and control. He has secured more than £88 million in research funding and published more than 650 academic papers. Professor Jovica Milanovic is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of the Serbian Academy of Engineering Sciences, IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, and IEEE Power & Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer. He currently serves as Vice President of the IEEE Power & Energy Society and as a member of its Board of Governors, Executive Committee, Finance Committee, and Long-Range Planning Committee.
