The inaugural Summer Internship Programme jointly organized by Tsinghua University and CLP Holdings Limited (CLP) was successfully completed, with a closing ceremony held last Friday, July 24. Nine undergraduate students from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University completed a four-week internship, gaining an in-depth understanding of developments and challenges in the energy sector through research projects focusing on energy transition, power system development, and innovative technology applications.
Guests attending the closing ceremony included Ye Shuiqiu, Deputy Director of the Social Development Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Fan Jia, Secretary-General of the Tsinghua Alumni Association of Hong Kong; and members of CLP’s senior management, including T.K. Chiang, Chief Executive Officer of CLP Holdings, and Yuen So Siu Mei, Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited. Student representatives shared their internship experiences at the ceremony, noting that the programme provided them with an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with practical work while deepening their understanding of the energy sector and sustainable development.
T.K. Chiang said, “The energy industry is undergoing profound transformation, and the sector needs to nurture more talent with professional expertise, innovative thinking, a forward-looking perspective and problem-solving skills. The summer internship programme jointly organized by CLP and Tsinghua University combines the strengths of corporate practice and academic education, enabling students to learn and grow through real-world experience while making a long-term investment in developing the next generation of energy professionals for the country.”
Yuen So Siu Mei expressed the hope that the internship would give students a deeper appreciation of Hong Kong’s vitality and unique role as an international city, and serve as a starting point for maintaining long-term connections with Hong Kong and CLP. She also encouraged the students to remain curious and open-minded, while keeping their commitment to serving society, and to leverage their strengths in different positions in the future to create value for society.
During the internship, the students visited CLP’s operational facilities and participated in a range of research projects related to the development of the energy industry. Topics included assessing the impacts of voltage sags and mitigation measures, designing backup power supplies for outlying islands, using data analytics to improve the utilization of electric vehicle charging facilities, exploring robotic applications in power systems, and studying China’s renewable energy electricity trading mechanisms. Through the internship, the students gained a deeper understanding of emerging trends and opportunities in the energy sector, as well as the challenges of maintaining a safe, reliable and sustainable electricity supply in Hong Kong, a densely populated international metropolis.
Wang Yiming, a Tsinghua University intern, said, “My internship at CLP was a transformative experience that took me from textbook theory into the realities of industry and expanded my perspective from a single technical discipline to a comprehensive understanding of the energy sector. As a vertically integrated power utility, CLP gave me my first comprehensive view of the entire process by which electricity is generated and ultimately delivered to customers. It also helped me understand that the energy sector is not merely a technical field, but a complex systems-engineering endeavor that requires collaboration across different disciplines and departments to achieve a safe, reliable and sustainable electricity supply. This experience has provided me with very concrete guidance for my future career development.”
CLP and Tsinghua University established the “Friends of Tsinghua–CLP Education Fund” in 2009 to support teaching and research development in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. To date, the fund has supported approximately 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Last year, the two parties signed a strategic cooperation agreement, under which CLP became Tsinghua University’s first “Undergraduate Practical Education Base” in Hong Kong. The agreement provides for undergraduate students to undertake internships in Hong Kong each year, formally strengthening collaboration between education and practical training and helping cultivate energy professionals with innovative capabilities and practical experience to support the country’s low-carbon transition.

At the closing ceremony, T.K. Chiang said that CLP would continue to deepen its collaboration with Tsinghua University and nurture a new generation of energy professionals equipped with professional expertise, innovative thinking, a forward-looking perspective and problem-solving skills.

Yuen So Siu Mei congratulated the Tsinghua University students on completing their summer internship and expressed the hope that the experience would give them a deeper appreciation of Hong Kong’s vitality and unique role as an international city, while serving as a starting point for maintaining long-term connections with Hong Kong and CLP.
