On March 14, Professor Thomas Fröhlich, Director of the Institute of Process Measurement and Sensor Technology at Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau), Germany, together with his spouse, as well as Zhang Zhongren and Duan Cong, Manager of the Weighing Product Application Department at Sartorius Germany, visited the Department of Electrical Engineering. The delegation was received by Professor Sun Kai, Deputy Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Professor Zhao Wei and Associate Professor Li Shisong from the Institute of New Electrical Technology; and key members of the Tsinghua Watt Balance Research Group.

Professor Thomas Fröhlich from Ilmenau University of Technology and representatives from Sartorius visit the Department of Electrical Engineering
During the symposium, Sun Kai extended a warm welcome to Professor Thomas Fröhlich and the other guests. He introduced the history and development of the Department of Electrical Engineering, as well as its recent achievements in discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research, and international collaboration. Professor Thomas Fröhlich presented an overview of Ilmenau University of Technology and the research progress made by his team in precision weighing units and tabletop watt balances, along with their collaborations with renowned international metrology institutions and Chinese research institutes and universities. Manager Zhang Zhongren from Sartorius shared an overview of the company’s precision balance products, services, and their applications in China. Li Shisong provided the visiting guests with a detailed update on the latest progress of Tsinghua University’s tabletop watt balance project.
The two sides engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions on several technical issues related to the construction of tabletop watt balance systems, and expressed mutual interest in future forms of collaboration, including reciprocal visits and joint research. Following the symposium, the guests visited the Watt Balance Laboratory of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Visiting the Watt Balance Laboratory
Tsinghua University’s watt balance project aims to complete the development of a new generation of compact quantum mass standards as soon as possible, thereby facilitating their widespread and efficient application in more national metrology institutes and high-level metrology laboratories.
