On November 12, Clarivate released the 2025 list of “Highly Cited Researchers.” A total of 6,868 scientists (7,131 person-times) from more than 1,300 institutions across 60 countries and regions worldwide were selected. Chinese mainland scholars accounted for 1,406 person-times, representing 19.7% of the total. Among them, Tsinghua University had 91 person-times selected, ranking third among global universities and first among universities in China.

In this year’s “Highly Cited Researchers” list, Tsinghua University had a total of 11 faculty members selected in the field of Engineering. According to preliminary statistics, a total of three electrical engineering scholars from the Chinese mainland were selected. Among them, Professor Kang Chongqing from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) is the only selected scholar in the field of electrical engineering at Tsinghua University, demonstrating his outstanding academic contributions and broad academic influence in electrical engineering and engineering as a whole.

The “Highly Cited Researchers” list aims to identify the most influential researchers in the global fields of natural and social sciences. The selection is based on citation data of papers in the Web of Science Core Collection under Clarivate, and through systematic analysis of high-quality papers published over the past decade, it identifies top scholars whose citation impact ranks in the top 1% globally within their respective disciplines and publication years. Inclusion on the list signifies that the scholar has made significant contributions to their research field and has received broad recognition from the international academic community.

Awardee Profile

Kang Chongqing received his PhD in 1997 from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is currently a Professor and Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Director of the Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute, and Director of the Tsinghua Energy Internet Innovation Institute. He is a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, an IEEE Fellow, and serves as Chair of the IEEE Power System Computation Conference (PCCC). His main research areas include power system planning, optimal operation of power systems, renewable energy integration, low-carbon power technologies, and electricity markets. He has led more than ten projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including joint funds, key international cooperation projects, and China–EU and China–UK collaborative research projects. He has authored four monographs as first author and co-authored two others, and has published more than 500 academic papers, including over 120 papers in the IEEE Transactions series. He has received the 2021 IEEE PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award, the 2021 IET Achievement Medal, and the 2024 IEEE PES Peter W. Sauer Distinguished Power Engineering Educator Award; his work has been selected four times as one of the “China’s 100 Most Influential International Academic Papers,” and he has won gold medals four times at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions; he has also received the National Second Prize for Teaching Achievement.
