On November 15, the Baosteel Education Award ceremony was grandly held in Shanghai. Professor Liang Xidong of the Department of Electrical Engineering was awarded the 2025 Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Special Prize. This award is one of the most widely recognized, prestigious, and highly valued awards among universities nationwide. This year, a total of 282 teachers and 509 students from 115 universities across China received the Baosteel Education Award, including 10 recipients of the Outstanding Teacher Special Prize.

Professor Liang Xidong has devoted himself to teaching and research for more than forty years, focusing on nurturing talents and adhering to Tsinghua University’s educational philosophy of “value shaping, ability cultivation, and knowledge imparting.” He has made outstanding achievements in the construction of Weiyang College, teaching reform, and talent cultivation.
Since assuming the position of the first Dean of Weiyang College in 2020, Professor Liang has actively promoted undergraduate education reforms in alignment with the National Strong Foundation Plan, making significant contributions to the independent cultivation of high-level talents in key national fields. Over the past six years, Weiyang College has enrolled six cohorts totaling over 2,000 Strong Foundation Plan undergraduates, with two cohorts of 662 science and engineering double-degree undergraduates graduating with “excellent academic performance and study ethos,” initially demonstrating the effectiveness of large-scale talent cultivation. The College has been awarded the Tsinghua University Teaching Achievement Special Prize.
In terms of teaching, Professor Liang has taught core courses such as High Voltage Engineering to undergraduates continuously for more than thirty years, driving reforms in electrical engineering education and creating national-level high-quality courses. He has received multiple honors including the Tsinghua University New Century Teaching Achievement Award and Beijing Outstanding Teacher Award. His edited textbook High Voltage Engineering was selected as a nationally planned textbook under the “15th Five-Year Plan,” continuously advancing both textbook development and teaching innovation. In addition, he has made notable contributions to research in high-voltage and insulation technology as well as supporting higher education in western China.
Professor Liang Xidong exemplifies the mission of “teaching as a vocation and fostering virtue as a fundamental duty” through his actions, representing an outstanding role model for university educators in China. His award is not only recognition of his personal dedication to education but also an encouragement for Tsinghua University faculty’s persistent efforts in teaching, talent cultivation, and scientific innovation.
The Baosteel Education Award originated from the “Baosteel Scholarship” established in 1990. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the award. As of 2024, over 28,000 teachers and students have received the Baosteel Education Award, including 7,490 teachers and more than 20,000 students, contributing actively to promoting the spirit of educators, supporting teaching and talent development, and advancing the nation’s goals of educational and talent excellence.
