In the summer of 2025, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University successfully hosted the “Future Power and Energy” (FPES) Summer School. The event brought together young scholars from multiple countries and regions, aiming to provide a high-level platform for learning and exchange for future talents in the global energy field through systematic academic courses, practical visits, and cultural activities.

Nine instructors from Tsinghua University EEA, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Macau delivered a series of specialized lectures focused on core topics and frontier directions in the energy sector. The curriculum closely aligned with the “dual carbon” strategy and energy innovation themes, systematically covering areas such as the construction of new power systems, advanced AC/DC transmission, solar photovoltaics, energy storage materials, data center energy management, digital twins, electric aircraft, and wireless power transmission. These courses broadened participants’ perspectives on the frontiers of power and energy disciplines and helped consolidate their knowledge framework.

Academic Lectures

To deepen participants’ understanding of theoretical knowledge, the summer school organized multiple practical visits. Participants first visited the State Key Laboratory for Operation and Control of New Type Power Systems at Tsinghua University, observing advanced equipment and experimental platforms up close, learning about key technologies and R&D processes in power system operation and control, and gaining an intuitive sense of the close integration between fundamental and applied research. They then visited Xiaomi’s automotive and robotics factories to examine energy management practices in smart manufacturing, energy efficiency of advanced production equipment, and the integration of new energy technologies in vehicle manufacturing, experiencing firsthand the pathway from theoretical research to industrial application.

Beyond academics and practical experience, the summer school also offered rich Chinese cultural activities and visits to cultural landmarks. In cultural activities, participants learned basic techniques of Chinese calligraphy, experiencing the aesthetic structure and cultural connotations of Chinese characters; engaged in making traditional Chinese round fans to understand the craft process and cultural meaning; listened to guzheng performances and tried basic playing to appreciate the tone and artistic expression of traditional instruments; and practiced basic martial arts movements to understand their physical and philosophical concepts. In cultural site visits, participants explored the Beijing Ancient Architecture Museum to learn about traditional construction techniques and cultural symbolism; visited the Temple of Heaven to study ancient ritual architecture layout and historical value; and climbed the Great Wall to appreciate the scale and historical significance of ancient military engineering. These activities gave participants a more direct and profound understanding of China’s long-standing history and culture.

The summer school aimed to provide a diversified space for academic and personal growth. Outside of classes, participants spontaneously organized sports activities, enhancing physical fitness while fostering communication and friendship. Scholars from different countries and regions shared academic insights and cultural perspectives, achieving cross-cultural exchanges and mutual inspiration. This blend of academic learning, practical exploration, and cultural experience became a valuable part of each participant’s personal development.

Spontaneous Sports Activities

With the successful conclusion of the summer school, participants departed enriched with new knowledge, experiences, and insights. Through the FPES Summer School, Tsinghua University EEA established a high-quality exchange platform for young scholars in the global energy field and demonstrated an educational philosophy that integrates disciplinary development with cultural heritage. In the future, Tsinghua EEA will continue to provide learning and exchange opportunities for more young talents, supporting the cultivation and development of the global energy workforce.
