From June 15 to 20, the International Pulsed Power and Plasma Science Conference was held in Berlin, Germany, where the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced the results of several awards. Liu Zhigang, a 2024 graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University, was awarded the Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.

The IEEE Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award was established by the IEEE Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee (PPST) in 1981, initially named the PPST Outstanding Pulsed Power Student Award in 1997, and later renamed to its current title in 2007. The award aims to recognize students for their outstanding contributions in the fields of pulsed power engineering, science, or technology. One or two winners are selected each year, with the award ceremony held every two years at the IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference.

Liu Zhigang, a male PhD student in the 2019 cohort at EEA, was supervised by Professor Zou Xiaobing. He currently works at the School of Electrical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, with research focused on the physics of metal wire explosions and related pulsed power technologies.
