In the midsummer season, with everything flourishing, the 2025 Graduation Ceremony and Launch Ceremony for the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University were grandly held in the Great Hall on the afternoon of June 21. Graduates of EEA and the Major of Electrical Engineering at Weiyang College, along with 2025 graduates from the Shenzhen International Graduate School, postdoctoral fellows, alumni representatives such as Academician Zhou Xiaoxin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, faculty, staff, and friends and family of the graduates gathered together to witness the students' completion of their studies and their journeys toward the vast mountains and seas. The ceremony was hosted by Zhou Jiayue, a 2025 doctoral graduate, and Zhu Xuanyu, an undergraduate graduate.

All participants sing the national anthem

Professor Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department, delivers a speech.

At 2 p.m., the ceremony commenced with the solemn and majestic national anthem, filling the Great Hall with a dignified and warm atmosphere.

Professor Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department, delivered the welcome speech and introduced the general situation of this year's graduates. He first warmly congratulated all the graduates, sincerely welcomed all the guests, and expressed heartfelt thanks to all the sectors of society that have supported and cared for EEA. He traced the 93-year history of the department, emphasizing the importance of inheriting the "steadfast and outstanding" spirit in the new era. Professor Zheng then introduced the 2025 graduating class: This year, the Department has 53 doctoral graduates, 55 master's graduates, and 112 undergraduate graduates from both EEA and Weiyang College, along with 40 postdoctoral fellows successfully completing their terms. Among the undergraduates, the graduate school continuation rate is 90.1%; 82 students have directly entered employment, with 70.2% in the power and electrical industries, which continues to be the dominant employment sector for graduates. Graduates from the department have found employment in 15 provincial-level administrative regions across the country, with 64.6% of them working outside Beijing, and 21.9% of them working in the central, western, and northeastern regions, showing Tsinghua graduates' national responsibility of "joining the mainstream and taking the big stage." Finally, Professor Zheng encouraged the students to be self-reliant and to keep the spirit of continuous striving, achieving new accomplishments in the future.

Alumni Representative, Academician Zhou Xiaoxin, delivers a speech.

Academician Zhou Xiaoxin of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an alumnus graduated from EEA in 1965 delivered a speech as the alumni representative. He fondly recalled his graduation from Tsinghua 60 years ago. At that time, China’s power industry was just beginning, and he and his classmates developed China’s first power system analysis program using paper and pencil and a 1KB memory tube computer. Despite the lack of theoretical frameworks, development equipment, and team support, they overcame technical challenges in national projects like the 330 kV "Liu-Tian-Guang" project and the ±500 kV "Gezhouba-Shanghai" DC project. Referring to this challenging scientific journey, Academician Zhou offered words of advice to the 2025 graduates: In an era of technological transformation in the energy sector, including quantum transmission and brain-machine interfaces, they should embrace lifelong learning to explore the frontiers of their fields, carry forward Tsinghua’s spirit of "actions speak louder than words," and courageously innovate. He also advised them to critically assess the efficiency revolution in grid diagnosis powered by AI technology and the data security risks it poses. Graduates should turn energy crises into opportunities for technological breakthroughs and use flaws in algorithms as motivation to improve models, truly becoming Tsinghua Electrical Engineers who are "capable of great things and willing to take on heavy responsibilities." Finally, he expressed his hope that graduates would often return to their alma mater and contribute to the department’s development with their achievements in the energy industry, writing a new chapter in China’s energy sector.

Graduate Representatives Deliver Speeches

Postdoctoral graduate representative Xu Qingyu reflected on his growth journey: He admitted that he chose to pursue postdoctoral research because his research, organizational, and social abilities still needed refinement after completing his doctorate. However, his love for research remained strong. During his time in Tsinghua's West Main Building, he experienced many "firsts," including being called "Professor," socializing at international conferences, independently organizing research, and guiding students. These experiences, along with the ups and downs of fund applications and project challenges, helped him mature. Whether in academia, industry, or government, he is determined to uphold Tsinghua’s belief of "success does not have to be mine, but success must be achieved with my participation," and contribute wisdom and strength to the country’s energy and power sector.

Doctoral graduate representative Li Junlu shared his five-year research journey: Facing the difficulty of China’s polypropylene capacitor films being blocked by foreign markets, he abandoned traditional technological routes and found breakthroughs through molecular chain chemical modifications. After three years of process exploration and failure in the kilometer-long production line validation, he eventually achieved a storage energy density of 4.5 J/cm³ at 125°C for domestically produced films, surpassing the performance of imported materials. When the capacitor passed the durability test, he deeply realized: "The weight of the doctoral hat is not only academic achievement but also the courage to face extreme adversity."

Master’s graduate representative Ma Qingyuan shared his dual-line growth experience: As a volunteer for the "burning snowflake" at the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony, he spent 200 hours serving at the Bird's Nest, conveying the warmth of Chinese youth. On his research path, he faced the setback of having his paper rejected seven times. His mentor’s words, "Self-reliance is the stance of life," encouraged him to rally and ultimately solve the complex problem of analyzing the frequency distribution of high-voltage power systems. "Those sleepless nights after being rejected, those moments of confusion at the breadboard, will eventually transform into the power to break free from the cocoon and become a butterfly."

Ma Qingyuan, master’s graduate representative, delivers a speech

Undergraduate graduate representative Deng Kaihang fondly recalled the camaraderie among classmates: The soaked clothes during a 20-kilometer night march, staying up all night due to EDA errors, and the everlasting lights in the West Main Building laboratory depicted the years of growth shared with his "classmates." His class, Electric 15, won the "Advanced Class Group of Tsinghua University Undergraduate Graduates," and he himself was awarded the National Natural Science Foundation’s Youth Student Basic Research Project, becoming one of the first undergraduate students in the country’s electrical engineering discipline to receive such funding.

Deputy Dean of EEA, Lu Chao, delivered a speech as a teacher representative. Reflecting on his thirty years at Tsinghua, he recalled the team led by Academician Han Yingduo, who spent thirty years developing flexible transmission technology, extending it to high-altitude wind power and high-speed rail power supply. He emphasized, "When personal direction aligns with national needs, it is like a stream flowing into the sea." Sharing his experience with the South Grid project, where the team spent a year at the Guizhou converter station to build the world’s first thousand-kilometer damping system, he pointed out, "On-site practice is the furnace that turns knowledge into engineering capability." Finally, he called on the graduates to inherit the spirit of "no Tsinghua without sports," adhere to the department’s motto of "study rigorously, be upright in character," and contribute wisdom to the industry.
