On the morning of April 23, the Conference Commemorating the 90th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University was held at the New Tsinghua Lecture Hall. Guests including Li Meng, former vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and an alumnus admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1995, Qiu Yong, secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shu Yinbiao, chairman of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, chairman of Huaneng Group, chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering , Sun Changji, honorary chairman of China Electrotechnical Society and former Vice Minister of Machinery, Zeng Rong, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Bi Tianshu, a representative of domestic brother universities and colleges and vice president of North China Electric Power University, attended the conference.

As the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China is about to be held, we are celebrating the 73rd anniversary of the motherland. On this National Day, teachers and students of EEA actively participated in the social practices on “Recalling the Extraordinary Days and Celebrating the 20th National Congress” to wish our motherland a happy birthday with sincere actions! On October 1st, Cheng Zhikai, a student from the TMS Branch of EEA, participated in the activity of “Teachers and Students of Tsinghua University Visiting the History Exhibition Hall of the Communist Party of China”, more than 120 teachers and students lined up in front of the sculpture “Flag” in the west square and listened to Mr. Qiu Yong's lecture “Micro Party Class”, and collectively visited the themed exhibition of more than 100-year history of the Chinese Communist Party, to experience the history of the Party's struggle in a panoramic way and absorb spiritual strength. On October 2, the party group of Energy Class 24 followed other party branches and individuals of Tsinghua University to carry out the “Visit to the Memorial Hall of Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War”. On October 3, Jiang Peixue, vice president of Tsinghua University, and Mr. Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA, led the party class team of Energy Class 23 to Shougang Park to carry out practices. Four Ph.D Candidates from EEA Won the 2021 IEEE DEIS Graduate Fellowship

The Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) selected 6 IEEE DEIS Graduate Fellowship winners worldwide, among which 4 students from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics won the award, and a scholarship of USD 5,000 each. The IEEE DEIS Graduate Fellowship was founded by the IEEE Dielectric and Electrical Insulation Society to provide assistance to graduate students in the field related to electrical insulation and dielectric environment around the world. Their postgraduate research can cover a wide range including insulating media, dielectric properties and breakdown, charge transport, high voltage effects, etc. The evaluation criteria of the award are mainly the creativity of the postgraduate subject, influence of the selected subject and the ability of the postgraduate to complete the goal during the award period. The award winners are fixed by members of the DEIS Education Committee. In 2021, four doctoral students Pei Jiayao, Wang Shaojie, Wang Tianyu and Cheng Sang from EEA won this honor.

Zhang Ning and Kang Chongqing Published an Article in “Nature Communications” to Explore the Structural Morphology and Evolution Path of China’s Power System under the Dual-carbon Goal

Associate Professor Zhang Ning and Professor Kang Chongqing from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) of Tsinghua University have made important progress in the field of carbon neutral transformation of China’s power system. The EEA team, together with Harvard University, the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development of Tsinghua University, the School of Environment of Tsinghua University, and the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization, carried out research on the planning optimization and operation simulation of the carbon neutral transformation of China’s power system. By combining the energy resource endowment with the actual data of the power system, they analyzed the key impact of the dual-carbon goal on the structure and transition cost of China’s power system, and deduce the evolution path of the power system to achieve the dual-carbon goal. The research result was published in the international academic journal Nature Communications under the title “Cost Increase in the Electricity Supply to Achieve Carbon Neutrality in China”.

Professor Wu Weihan won the 2022 “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award”

On May 17, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering notified the review result of the 2022 Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award, and granted the 2022 “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award” to Professor Wu Weihan of Tsinghua University in recognition of his pioneering contributions to electromagnetic transient numerical calculation and power system lightning protection. The Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE PES) jointly established the “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award” in 2010 to reward an expert who has made major achievements in the field of electrical engineering and made important contributions to the progress of electric power technology. According to the “Regulations for Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award”, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering and IEEE PES jointly organized the selection of the 2022 Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award. After being nominated by experts, reviewed by the international election committee, and approved by the Standing Council of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering and the Board of Directors of IEEE PES, Professor Wu Weihan of Tsinghua University was granted the 2022 “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award”.

President Wang Xiqin Attended the Symposium with EEA to Plan Development of Disciplines

On September 13, President Wang Xiqin went to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) to discuss the construction and development of the department. More than 30 EEA teachers, including EEA Dean Kang Chongqing, EEA’s Party Committee Secretary Yu Xinjie, CAS Academician Lu Qiang and CAE Academician Han Yingduo, participated in the discussion. 1st Volume of International Journal “iEnergy” Sponsored by EEA of Tsinghua University Was Officially Launched

In March 2022, the open-access English international academic journal “iEnergy” sponsored by Tsinghua University was officially launched, with Professor He Jinliang from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics of Tsinghua University as the editor-in-chief. This journal is published by Tsinghua University Press, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is responsible for overseas distribution. Low-carbon energy transformation and high-quality development are major opportunities and challenges in the world today, and there is an urgent need to build a new type power system that is clean and low-carbon, safe and controllable, flexible and efficient, intelligent and friendly, and open and interactive. Tribute to Mr. Mao Yugui — an “Ordinary Tsinghua Worker” As Old As EEA

On the Gobi Desert, which stretches for thousands of miles in the northwest of China, in a bitterly cold place where wind and sand are raging, there is a kind of plant that grows tenaciously, and in summer, a piece of green lights up the entire desert. He is the “licorice”, the pioneer of windbreak and sand fixation, an “elder of the country” who cures diseases and saves lives, silently dedicated himself, and defined the ordinary but great “licorice spirit”. Mao Yugui, a senior student graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1952, is such a licorice. He took root in the Northwest, regardless of fame and fortune, worked hard, and lit up thousands of families in Dingbian County. 2022 is the 90th birthday of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Mao Yugui, born in 1932, is as old as the Department of Electrical Engineering.
