The cooperation agreement on Tsinghua-State Grid Power System Research Institute led by the Department of Electrical Engineering & Applied Electronic Technology (EEA) Tsinghua University (THU) was formally signed at the headquarters of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) on the morning of March 1, 2019. Qiu Yong, president of Tsinghua University, Kou Wei, chairman of the Board of Directors and secretary of the Party Group of State Grid Corporation, and Xin Baobao, general manager and deputy secretary of the Party Group of State Grid Corporation, attended the ceremony. Xue Qikun, vice president of Tsinghua University, and Zhang Zhigang, vice general manager of State Grid Corporation signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of both sides. Academicians Lu Qiang and Han Yingduo of the EEA THU, General Manager Assistants Zhang Liying and Wang Yimin, witnessed the signing ceremony. Zeng Rong, director of Personnel Department and professor of the EEA THU, Kang Chongqing, director of the EEA, Yu Xinjie, secretary of the EEA Party Committee, and Lu Zongxiang, deputy director of the EEA, attended the meeting.

Under the framework of the Power System Research Institute, the EEA will cooperate with the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) in three areas: energy transformation strategy, basic theory and technology system of the new generation electric power system, and major subversive key technologies in crossing fields. It will promote the integration of production, education and research in an all-round way, and establish an innovative consortium representing the national level.

At the signing ceremony, Qiu Yong said that THU and SGCC had a deep source of cooperation, and both sides jointly promoted scientific and technological innovation and served economic and social development. The signing of the agreement to establish the Power System Research Institute means deeper, far-reaching and more pragmatic cooperation of the two sides. At present, Tsinghua University is in the critical period of promoting comprehensive reform in an all-round way and accelerating the construction of "Double First-Class". He hoped both sides should take this cooperation as an opportunity to innovate the mode of scientific research cooperation, focus on the national demand and the frontier tasks in energy field, strengthen basic and strategic researches, achieve the first-class research results with international leadership, and highlight the Innovation, International Cooperation and Integration, and constantly promote energy science and technology innovation to achieve greater breakthroughs and make important contributions to China's energy transformation.

On behalf of the SGCC, Kou Wei thanked Tsinghua University for its long-standing support and help. He said that the Nineteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed to cultivate world-class enterprises with global competitiveness. The SGCC always regards innovation as the first driving force, adheres to the two-wheel drive of "reform" and "innovation", attaches great importance to the integration of industry, education and research, and continuously improves the ability of scientific and technological innovation. This year, the SGCC Party Group has established the strategic goal of "Three-type, Two-network, World-class" energy Internet enterprise, and put forward higher requirements for scientific and technological innovation. Many key technologies still need to be tackled in the areas of power Internet of things and smart grid. Tsinghua University has strong disciplines of electrical engineering, and has trained a large number of leading talents for China's power industry. It is hoped that the two sides will give full play to their respective advantages, further optimize cooperation in science, technology, talents training and industrial development, promote the operation of projects and transformation of achievements, constantly enhance independent innovation ability and core competitiveness of both sides, and jointly contribute to building a well-off society in an all-round way and building a socialist modern country.

According to the Agreement, the two sides will give full play to the multidisciplinary basic research and talent-intensive advantages of Tsinghua University and leading enterprise advantages of State Grid Corporation in the energy industry by a united, coordinated and demand-oriented way, focusing on national needs, strengthening basic and strategic research, enhancing core technological innovation capabilities, and striving to win major original breakthroughs in frontier and subversive technologies in the process of energy transformation in China. The two sides jointly invest superior resources, innovate the mode of scientific research cooperation, and build the joint research institute into a national team of independent innovation of energy and power core technology and a high-end think tank leading the development of the industry, which will become a platform for both sides to carry out scientific and technological research, resource sharing, gathering talents and nurturing achievements.

The responsible persons of the EEA, Office, Research Institute and Personnel Department of Tsinghua University, the office, research room, development department, science and technology department and HR department of State Grid Corporation, China Electric Power Research Institute, and Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute, attended the relevant activities.

It is reported that THU and SGCC have carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation in the fields of large power grid security, automation, renewable energy penetration, operation and maintenance of transmission and transformation equipment, integrated energy services, energy storage, information and communication, research and development and manufacture of high-end electrical equipment, etc. The two sides have won 14 National Science and technology awards for cooperation in UHV transmission, large power grid security and other fields. In 2011 and 2014, the State Grid Corporation established the State Grid Excellence Innovation Fund and the UHV Scholarship in Tsinghua University. (From Tsinghua News Network)
