Weidong Liu graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University with Bachelor's degree in 1982, and from Tsinghua University with Master degree and Doctor’s degree respectively in 1985 and 1989. He started his teaching and research career in Electrical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University from 1989, has been appointed Professor since 2003, and was an academic visitor in Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Liverpool University from 1990 to 1992. His main research areas include: Interrupting performance of SF6 circuit breakers; Measurement, analysis and suppression of switching transients in power equipment and networks; On-line condition monitoring of power equipment. The progresses he made in his research areas include: measurement of transient pressures in the nozzle of SF6 circuit breakers during heavy current interruption; experimental investigation of very fast transients in UHV GIS and suppression of the transients by magnetic rings; detection of partial discharges in GIS in UHF method from outside GIS. The subjects and issues he currently concentrates on include: Measurement of the arc shape and the temperature distribution in the nozzle with the SF6 circuit breaker interruption; The partial discharge characteristics of the defects on GIS insulator surface and the limitation of the UHF method to detect such defects; Fault current limiting based on fault current transferring in the first power frequency zero of the fault current, so as to reduce the demand on the circuit breakers.
