Brief Introduction

Chongqing Kang received a Bachelor's degree in both Electrical Power Engineering and Environmental Engineering at Tsinghua University in 1993. He has been teaching at Tsinghua University since he received a PhD degree in Electrical Power Engineering in 1997. He was appointed Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University in 2000 and Professor in 2005. He has been awarded the title of 'Outstanding Teacher of Beijing' and the “Beijing Municipal Prominent Teacher Award” . He is now a full Professor and Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, President of Tsinghua University Energy Internet Research Institute, and President of Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute. He is a Fellow of IEEE/IET/CSEE (Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering). He was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Leading Talents in Scientific and Technological Innovation of the "Ten Thousand Talents Plan," Program for New Century Excellent Talents of China, and selected for the Program of the Fok Ying-Tong Education Foundation. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge, UK, from 2007 to 2008. He was appointed Outstanding Visiting Professor of Imperial College London, UK since 2020 and Adjunct Professor of Yonsei University, South Korea since 2021.

Prof. Chongqing Kang’s research interests include power system planning, power system optimization, energy Internet, renewable energy integration, low-carbon electricity technology, load forecasting, and the electricity market. Prof. Chongqing Kang has been the P.I. of more than 10 programs of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), including 3 Key Programs (NSFC Key Program, Key Program for International Cooperation, and Key Program for NSFC Joint Funds), 5 Key Programs for International Cooperation and Exchange (including 1 China-EU Cooperation Research Project, 1 China-UK Joint Research Project, 1 China-US TAMU-NSFC exchange fund, and 2 NSFC-NRF Scientific Cooperation Programs), and 2 projects supported by NSFC Special Funds (including research projects on the National Energy Internet Development Strategy and the Development Strategy of New Power Systems). In 2016 and 2021, he was approved as the project leader for 1 project each under the National Key R&D Program funded by MOST(Ministry Of Science and Technology): “Basic Theory of High-Proportion Renewable Energy Grid-Incorporated Power System Planning and Operation” (10M USD), and “Key Technologies for Aggregation and Interactive Regulation of Large-scale Flexible Resource Virtual Power Plants” (9.3M USD). Right now he is also leading an industrial project titled “Research and demonstration of key technologies of large-scale advanced energy storage” funded by China Three Gorges Corporation with 21M USD.

Prof. Chongqing Kang currently serves as an Editorial Board Member of Electric Power Systems Research (Elsevier), International Journal of Electric Power & Energy Systems (Elsevier), and some other international journals. He is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief for journals "Power System Technology" and "Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems (PCMP)". Additionally, he is the Editorial Board Member of numerous Chinese journals, including Proceedings of Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, Automation of Electric Power Systems, Automation & Equipment of Power System, Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems (PCMP), Electric Power Construction, Guangdong Electric Power, CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems (CSEE-JPES), and Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy (MPCE). In addition, he serves as the Chairman of IEEE PES China Professional Chapter Council (PCCC), a member of the Long-Range Planning Committee of IEEE PES, a member of CIGRE SC C1 Strategic Advisory Committee and Chairman of the Power System Development and Economics (C1) Special Committee of CIGRE China National Committee. The other academic adjuncts are as follows, Vice President of Beijing Society for Electrical Engineering, Director of the Technical Committee of the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Renewable Energy Generation and Grid Integration Control, Chairman of the Integrated Energy Systems Committee of the China Industrial Energy Conservation and Clean Production Association (CIECCPA), Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on Electrical Mathematics of CSEE, Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on Electro-Carbon Coupling Technology of China Energy Research Society (CERS), Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on New Power System of CERS, Vice President of China New-Type Energy Storage Industry Innovation Alliance, Committee Member of the Special Committee on Power System Control and Protection of the China Electrotechnical Society, Commitee Member of the Special Committee on Grid Connection of the China Renewable Energy Society, Committee Member of National Metrology Technical Committee of Low-Carbon Measurement, a member of Expert Committee of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., and Managing Director of the Energy Internet Special Committee of the Chinese Association of Automation.

Prof. Chongqing Kang has authored 7 monographs in both Chinese and English and has published over 600 papers, including more than 210 SCI-indexed papers (including over 120 IEEE Transactions papers) and over 460 EI-indexed papers. His papers have been cited over 32,000 times on Google Scholar, with an H-index of 91 and the highest citation count for a single paper exceeding 1100 times. He was recognized as Elsevier's Chinese Most Cited Researcher (in all topic) since 2017 and has been listed among the top 2% of scientists globally (ranking 7926th globally in 2023). He was awarded one hundred most influential papers and top articles in outstanding S&T journal of China (one paper in 2008, one in 2012, and two in 2020). He holds more than 40 granted invention patents (including 8 international patents) and over 20 software copyrights. He has won 6 gold medals and 1 silver medals International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, and 2 silver medals at the 10th Beijing Invention and Innovation Competition (in 2016). In 2014, he won the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement (as the first contributor). He was awarded the Global Power Energy Forecast Competition Winning Award by IEEE PES at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Denver, USA, in July 2015. He was also awarded the 2018 China Electric Power Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award. In 2020 he was selected for the IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer Program. Based on his academic contributions, he won the IEEE PES Roy Billinton Power System Reliability Award and IET Achievement Medal in 2021.
