1.1 Brief Introduction

Prof. Xinzhou Dong is the head of the power system protection team, director of the power system research institute at the Department of Electric Engineering of Tsinghua University. He is the IET Fellow, IEEE Fellow, AAIA Fellow, CSEE Fellow, director of the Green Energy and Power Safety Beijing International Science and Technology Cooperation Center.

He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1983 with a Bachelor's degree, graduated from Xi'an Jiaotong University with a Master degree in 1991 and a PhD degree in 1996. He completed a post-doctor study at the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1999. Since 1999, he was appointed as an associate professor and promoted to a full professor in 2004 by Tsinghua University.

He is a member of CIGRE B5, a member of the CIGRE China National Technical Committee, the chairman of the CIGRE-B5-55 traveling wave protection working group, a member of the CIRED National Technical Committee, the chairman of the IEEE PES China Power System Relaying and Control Satellite Technical Committee, the chairman of the IEC TC95 AHG4 working group, a council member of the China Electrotechnical Society, the vice chairman of the Protection and Control Techinical Committee of the China Electrotechnical Society, the vice chairman of the Relaying Committee of the China Society for Hydropower Engineering, a member of the protective relaying expert group of State Grid Corporation of China, a member of National Standardization Administration Committee on Measurement Relay and Protection Equipment of China, a member of National Standardization Administration Committee on Short Circuit Current Calculation of China, a member of the National Short Circuit Current Calculation Standardization Committee, a member of the Shaanxi Provincial Hundred Talents Program, a distinguished professor at Shaanxi University of Technology, a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde in the UK, and a part-time professor at National Taipei University of Technology. He is also an editorial board member of PCA World, CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems, Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy, Journal of Electric Power Automation Equipment, Journal of Power System Automation, Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology, Journal of Electric Power Engineering Technology, Journal of Power System Technology, Journal of Shaanxi University of Technology, and deputy editor-in-chief of Journal of Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems.

Professor Dong has successively presided over 6 major projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, including the key project, general project, and international cooperation project. He has also led one international cooperation project with the Ministry of Science and Technology and one large-scale international cooperation project (Tsinghua University - ALSTOM Joint Research Center). He participated in one 973 project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, one project of the Ministry of Education, one International Cooperation Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology with Denmark, China-British Cooperation Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and System protection technology for preventing cascading faults of AC-DC hybrid power grid by SGCC.

His main academic contributions are: the first person led the application of wavelet transform in power system fault analysis and fault traveling wave research, the invention of modern traveling wave fault location technology, modern traveling wave protection technology, traveling wave fault line selection technology, and the development of the world first transient traveling wave protection testing instrument; proposed and implemented a station domain integrated protection technology for power system security; proposed and implemented power line non communication protection technology and high resistance grounding fault detection technology in collaboration with ALSTOM company.

Based on the above research, 450 papers have been published, 5 academic books have been written, 7 academic works have been translated, and 120 invention patents have been authorized. He has won the 2020 National Innovation Prize, 2017 China Electric Power Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award, 2016 CIGRE Outstanding Member Award, two second prizes of National Science and Technology Invention Award, one second prize of the National Excellent Teaching Material Award, 10 first and second prizes of provincial and ministerial awards, three gold prizes of the Geneva International Invention Exhibition, and two KEPCO Leading edge Prizes of the Korea International Invention Expo. He was awarded MPCE Outstanding Editor in 2016, JPES Outstanding Contribution to Journal Award in 2018, and Elsevier Highly Cited China Scholar from 2017 to 2019. He hosted two large-scale international conferences IEEE APAP2011 and APAP2015, and the China-Korea Relay Protection Forum 16 times. Served as the advisory chairman for the International Conference on Electronic Technology (ICET) for four consecutive years, and was a committee member for the 7th, 10th, 14th, and 15th International Conference on Developments in Power System Protection (DPSP), as well as a member of the advisory committee for the 6th International Conference on Power System Technology (Powercon).
