Undergraduate Course

In 2017, the compulsory courses in the undergraduate training program of Electrical Engineering and Automation requires 170 credits (16 hours per credit), of which 155 are for compulsory courses and 15 are for students' self-development courses. Compulsory courses are divided into general education for 44 credits (ideology and politics, sports, English and cultural quality courses), and professional education for 111 credits (35 for basic mathematics, 50 for major courses, 15 for comprehensive thesis training, and 11 for summer semester and practical training). The courses feature the combinations of strong and weak electricity, software and hardware, devices and systems, and information and energy.

Overview of major courses:

(1) Humanities and social sciences: politics, economy, management, English;
(2) Basic courses of natural science: mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology;
(3) Basic courses of engineering technology: circuit principle, electromagnetic field, electronic technology, automatic control, signal and system, engineering mechanics, computer hardware and software, communication technology and network application, single-chip computer embedded system, digital signal processing, etc.
(4) Professional basic courses: Electrical engineering, power system analysis, high voltage engineering, power electronics technology;
(5) Professional courses: power system relay protection, power plant engineering, power system stability and control, power system dispatching automation, power market introduction, electrical principle and application, overvoltage and its protection, DC transmission technology, electromagnetic measurement, on-line monitoring of electrical equipment, power transmission and control, electronic motor design and analysis, motor analysis, micro-special motors, dielectrics material and insulation technology, information theory and power system, etc.

In the wave of energy revolution, the state and society have a large number of demands for internationalized and complex high-end innovative talents in the field of energy. In the context of the energy revolution, the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University proposed and established the International Class of Energy Internet for Electrical Engineering and Automation in April 2017. Based on the training program for the major of Electrical Engineering and Automation, the training program for the students of the International Class of Energy Internet was formulated. The training program stipulates some courses of electrical engineering and automation, and adds compulsory and optional courses such as engineering thermodynamics, energy economy, energy policy, etc. The international characteristics should be reflected in terms of training objectives (to be able to serve in major global energy organizations in the future), training process (one semester of overseas exchanges), course contents (international cutting-edge technology and knowledge in global vision), teaching form (English or bilingual teaching) and other aspects, and the first students were enrolled in the International Class in September 2017.

Practice Teaching

A lot of practices are required in the training programs of undergraduate and graduate students in Department of Electrical Engineering. The compulsory practice link for undergraduates includes electronic technology practice, specialized subject practice, computer practice, comprehensive thesis training, cognitive practice, production practice and so on. There are also compulsory centralized practice links in the summer vacation of the first academic year of postgraduates. The experiment and training which combines theory with practice is of great benefit to the improvement of students' practical ability, innovative ability and consciousness of serving the society.

By actively taking advantage of its cooperation in the electrical industry, Department of Electrical Engineering has established long-term strategic partnership with many top enterprises in the electrical field in personnel training over the years. Production practice bases have been established successively in Shanghai Electric, Schneider, Inner Mongolia Energy Base, Xi'an Electric and others. The mode of undergraduate production practice has initially come into being, in which students choose voluntarily and concentrate their practice mainly, and disperse their practice as a supplement. They have won many Gold, Silver and Copper Awards for Practice in Tsinghua University. Since 2015, the "Dream Grid" practice branch team of the Department has built photovoltaic micro-grid for remote power-free areas in Xinjiang, Sichuan and other places, using the knowledge learned to benefit society, and has won many titles such as "Excellent Team of Summer Social Practice for Capital College and Secondary School Students", "Excellent Practice Award for Students' Social Practice of Tsinghua University (Mobile Cup)" and "Branch Team of Golden Award for Students' Social Practice of Tsinghua University".

Construction of Teaching Laboratory

According to the needs of personnel training and scientific research, the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University has continuously improved the conditions of teaching and scientific research, promoted the improvement and reform of the platforms of the State Key Laboratory of Electrical Power System, the Electrical Engineering Experimental Teaching Center and the Electrical and Electronic Experimental Center, and gradually realized the goals of improving the conditions of scientific research, complete software and hardware functions and adequate teaching equipment. All this lays solid foundation for key technology research, professionals training and gaining of high-level academic achievements.

Over the years, the State Key Laboratory of Electric Power Systems has insisted on meeting the major national needs of the electric power industry, actively participated in the research of important national topics around the three themes of "safety, economy and environmental friendliness", carried out important forward-looking basic researches, applied basic research and key technology research, and actively used scientific research achievements in the national electric power industry while continuously achieving scientific research results.

The National Electrical Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center was established in 2008 on the basis of the Electrical Engineering Automation Laboratory. It consists of the Electric Power System Teaching Lab, the High Voltage Teaching Lab, the Electrical Equipment and Intelligent Teaching Lab, the Gas Discharge and Plasma Teaching Lab, the Motor Teaching Lab, the Power Electronics and Motor Control Teaching Lab, and the Electrical Engineering Automation Lab. Each laboratory assumes double responsibilities in scientific research and teaching, and they play an important supporting role in the teaching and scientific research of the Department.

Electrotechnics and Electronics Experimental Teaching Center is the experimental teaching demonstration center of Beijing and Tsinghua University. It offers experimental courses for undergraduates and postgraduates of three electrical departments (Departments of Electrical Engineering, Automation, and Computer) and 17 non-electrical departments (including Biomedical Engineering). It undertakes the experimental teaching tasks of more than 130 classes of students every year. The number of class hours is as high as 220,000 hours/year. There are 16 electrician and electronics experimental teaching courses. The Electrotechnics and Electronics Experimental Teaching Center consists of four laboratories of basic electrics, applied electrics, electronic technology and EDA.
