Biography
Qinglai Guo has been appointed Professor of Electrical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University since 2020. He holds Bachelor's degrees of Electrical Power Engineering in 2000, and a Ph.D in Electrical Power Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2005. In 2020, he was awarded the Special Prize of China Science & Technology Award for Young Scholars (only 10 winners every two years in China). In 2015, he was awarded the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. In 2016, he was awarded the Mao Yisheng Beijing Youth Technology Award. In 2017, he was awarded the Yangtze River Young Scholar. In 2018, he was awarded the Beijing Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. His research interests include Energy Management System, Voltage Stability and Control, Cyber-Physical System, Renewable Energy Integration, and Electric Vehicles.
He is now an IET Fellow, IEEE senior member and a CIGRE member, and is involved in 5 workgroups of these two organizations. Now he is TCPC of Energy Internet Coordinating Committee of IEEE PES, the co-chair of IEEE PES Work Group on “Energy Internet”, IEEE PES Task Force on “Cyber-Physical Interdependence for Power System Operation and Control”, and IEEE PES Task Force on “Voltage Control for Smart Grid”. He is an editorial member of “IEEE Transactions on Power Systems”, “Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews”, “IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid”, “IET Renewable Power Generation”, “IET Cyber-Physical Systems: Theory & Applications”, “Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy”, and “Protection and Control of Modern Power Systems”. He is also the member of 4 committees in China, Asia and Europe, and has chaired 3 sessions in international conferences. He has been invited to give 15 presentations in China, the USA, the UK, Canada and Demark, for conferences, universities, research institutions as well as industrial companies. He was involved in the preparation of 3 industrial specifications on voltage control and wind power integration in China.
As a technical leader, he has devoted himself to researching and developing automatic voltage control (AVC) systems, which to date have been implemented to 6 regional control centers (6/7 of China’s total), 22 provincial control centers (2/3 of China’s total), 6 large wind/PV bases (2/3 of China’s total). These techniques have also been adopted by PJM in the USA (the largest regional grid in North America), TNB in Malaysia and BC Hydro in Canada.
To date he has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, 103 of which are SCI indexed papers (including 53 IEEE journal papers). One paper he supervised was awarded as 2016 IEEE PES Student Prize Paper. Two of his papers were identified by Renewable Energy Global Innovations as a Key Scientific Article contributing to the excellence in Energy research. One of his papers was identified as ESI 1%. One of his papers won the IET Premium Awards 2019. One of his papers was identified by F5000 articles of China. His two papers were selected as best conference papers of IEEE PES GM. As PI, he has led more than 20 projects, with a total funding of 32.47 million RMB (approximately US$ 5 million). He has been authorized 6 US Patents of Invention and more than 20 Chinese Patents of Invention, one of which has been rewarded a silver medal on the international exhibition of inventions of Geneva and the excellent patent prize of China. To date he has been rewarded 2 national awards and 10 provincial awards for his research contribution. In 2016 and 2007, two of his researches were awarded respectively as the Top Ten Science & Technology Progresses of Chinese Colleges.
