Abstract :

Hybrid solution methods allow us to integrate the diversity of requirements of modern large electric power systems. Traditional tools, for example, transient stability tools, impose a number of simplifications in the system representation, which are valid under traditional large inertia operation. Modern operation, with fast power electronic devices and fast controllers, requires mixing solution methods to correctly represent each subsystem dynamics. This presentation describes the work currently done at the University of British Columbia to develop multi-system hybrid integrated solutions. In particular, we will discuss the following topics: 1) Hybrid fast/slow simulation: Asynchronous multirate with the EMTP. 2) SFA for power system transient stability with large frequency deviations. 3) Hybrid complex/real simulation: SFA/EMTP interfacing. 4) Interdependent critical infrastructures in the integrating i2SIM framework. 5) Hybrid engineering/human systems: Resilience of power distribution systems with i2SIM.
