From August 23 to 28, the 51st CIGRE Session (CIGRE Paris Session 2026) was held in Paris, France. This year's Session took large power grid technology in the context of the energy transition as its core theme and attracted more than 5,400 delegates from the global energy and power sector. Professors Kang Chongqing, Dong Xinzhou, Liang Xidong, He Jinliang, Wang Xiongfei, and Zhang Bo, Associate Professors Zhang Ning, Zhong Haiwang, and Wu Chao, Assistant Researcher Zuo Zhou, as well as several postdoctoral fellows and doctoral students from the Department of Electrical Engineering attended the Session.

A number of faculty members chaired or participated in the core affairs of various CIGRE Technical Committees or Working Groups and conducted extensive academic exchanges.

Kang Chongqing and Zhang Ning served as Conveners of SC C1 Working Group C1.52 "Virtual Power Plants: Role and deployment in large power systems' operation and planning," and Zhong Haiwang served as Convener of SC C1 Working Group C1.54 "Assessment of system reserves and flexibility needs in the power systems of the future"; they convened Working Group meetings. The three faculty members also attended the closed meeting of Study Committee SC C1.

Dong Xinzhou has led the establishment of the CIGRE B5-55 Traveling Wave Protection Working Group and served as its Co-Chair since 2015; at this Session, he led Dr. Lin Jiahao and doctoral student Li Xinyuan in attending the CIGRE B5-55 Working Group meeting, which focused on the Working Group's final report, with a substantial portion adopting Tsinghua University's research results in the field of traveling wave protection.

Liang Xidong attended the kick-off meeting of CIGRE D1.84 Working Group on tracking resistance of DC insulation materials, and also convened, as Convener of IEC TC 36 WG11, a Working Group meeting on IEC 60815-4 selection and configuration of DC external insulation, systematically integrating China's decades of engineering experience and research results in the field of polluted external insulation into the international standards system; Wu Chao attended the closed meeting of Study Committee SC D1 and gave a presentation at the SC D1 group discussion session, discussing the latest research progress on "AI-assisted molecular structure design of dielectrics" and the possibility of its promotion and application.

He Jinliang served as Convener of JWG C4/A3.79 "Temporary overvoltage protection technologies for high-voltage transmission systems with large-scale renewable energy bases" and was elected Special Reporter of SC C4 for this year, the first time a Chinese expert has received this honor, and he also chaired the SC C4 group discussion session; in addition, he gave an invited presentation at the Ningbo Orient Cable Technical Seminar, which received widespread attention from international peers. Zhang Bo served as Convener of SC B2 Working Group B2.89 "Impact of rain upon the characteristics of corona discharge from HVAC and DC overhead transmission lines," convened a Working Group meeting, and gave a presentation at the SC B2 group discussion session.

Wang Xiongfei was invited to attend the SC B4 & C4 joint workshop "Grid-Forming Technologies and Control in Modern Power Systems" and gave an invited presentation. Among the 11 invited experts worldwide, Professor Wang Xiongfei was the only representative from academia; the other speakers came from grid companies and equipment manufacturers in countries such as China, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and South Korea.

During the Session, faculty and students from the Department of Electrical Engineering held in-depth discussions with scholars and engineering experts from around the world on the frontier challenges and opportunities of large power grid technology in the context of the energy transition, which not only demonstrated the Department's solid accumulation in the field of large power grid technology but also further expanded its cooperation network with international peers, contributing Tsinghua wisdom to the global energy transition.
