The National Science and Technology Awards Conference, the General Assembly of Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the 11th National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology were held in Beijing on the morning of July 8. The 2025 National Science and Technology Awards were announced, with a total of 258 projects and 11 distinguished scientists recognized. Tsinghua University received 19 awards in the three major categories of the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards, including two National Natural Science Awards, four National Technological Invention Awards, and 13 National Science and Technology Progress Awards. Tsinghua University faculty members as first award recipients or Tsinghua University as the first completing institution received seven awards across the three major categories.

Among them, the team led by Professor Zeng Rong of the Department of Electrical Engineering received the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Electronic Large-Capacity DC Voltage Conversion Technology, a Series of Equipment, and Engineering Applications

Application of Large-Capacity DC Transformers in New Energy Projects

Principal contributors: Zeng Rong, Zhao Biao, Yu Zhanqing, Wu Jinpeng, Qu Lu, Cui Bin, Lu Ting, Lu Yu, Lou Yantao, Zhang Yuehua

Principal contributing institutions: Tsinghua University; Ronxin Technology Electric Co., Ltd.; Nanjing NARI-Relays Electric Co., Ltd.; Xuji Electric Co., Ltd.; Xi’an PeiRui Power Semiconductor Converting Technology Co., Ltd.; China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd.; and State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company

Main achievements: Transformers are core equipment for energy conversion in power grids. AC transformers based on AC voltage conversion technology directly drove the rapid development of AC power grids. However, DC transformers face major challenges, including the difficulty of converting DC voltage and reducing equipment losses. After more than a decade of research and development, the project team overcame key technologies for ultra-large-capacity, ultra-low-loss DC voltage conversion and took the lead in developing a series of DC transformer products. These products were included in the national list of first-of-a-kind major technical equipment in the energy sector, providing strong support for independent innovation in China’s new-generation DC equipment and the implementation of the national energy transition strategy.
