From August 7 to 9, the 14th China-Korea Joint Symposium on High Renewable Energy Penetration to Power Systems (Conference on Power Systems for Carbon Neutrality), jointly organized by Tsinghua University and Korea University and hosted by Northeast Electric Power University, was held in Jilin City. Prof. Cai Guowei, President of Northeast Electric Power University, and Prof. Gilsoo Jang from Korea University delivered welcome remarks on behalf of their respective institutions. The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Yan Ganguo, Director of the Key Laboratory of Modern Power System Simulation Control and New Green Energy Technology, Ministry of Education, and convener of the symposium, while the closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University. The symposium, themed “Operation and Control of Power Systems with High Renewable Energy Penetration”, attracted over 80 experts and scholars from 19 universities and research institutions in China and Korea, showcasing the strong research capabilities of both countries in renewable energy power systems. The program included 14 high-level keynote speeches, 2 thematic panels, and a student poster session. Participants conducted in-depth exchanges on cutting-edge topics such as renewable energy grid integration technologies, power system stability control, and carbon-neutral pathways, providing innovative ideas for the development of high-renewable energy power systems.

During the symposium, participants from both China and Korea discussed future collaboration and the planning of the next bilateral symposium, reaching preliminary agreement on the date and location for the next meeting.

China-Korea discussions on future collaboration

The symposium received active participation and support from seven leading Korean universities—Korea University, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, Jeonbuk National University, Kwangwoon University, Sangmyung University, and Kyungpook National University—as well as 12 leading Chinese institutions, including Tsinghua University, Peking University, State Grid Jilin Electric Power Company, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Chongqing University, North China Electric Power University, University of Hong Kong, Northeast Electric Power University, Shandong University, Southeast University, and Shenyang Ligong University. The event was also supported by the Jilin Society for Electrical Engineering, IEEE PES Harbin Chapter, Korea University Resilient Autonomous Grid Research Center (RAGRC), Yonsei University Power System Research Center for Great Energy Transition (PREFER), and State Grid Jilin Electric Power Company.

Development of China-Korea Bilateral Academic Symposiums (2012–2025)

In 2012, Prof. Kang Chongqing, Dean of Tsinghua EEA, together with Prof. Yongcheol Kang from Jeonbuk National University, initiated the China-Korea Power Systems Academic Symposium. The initial focus was on Wind Energy Grid-Adaptive Technologies (WeGAT), establishing a stable bilateral cooperation mechanism. Founding Chinese institutions included Tsinghua University (lead), Zhejiang University, Shandong University, North China Electric Power University, Northeast Electric Power University, Hohai University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Dalian University of Technology. Founding Korean institutions included Jeonbuk National University (lead), Korea University, Seoul National University, Yeungnam University, and Hanyang University. In 2019, the symposium was officially renamed the Symposium on High Renewable Energy Penetration to Power Systems, expanding the research scope from wind power to the broader renewable energy power system field. Subsequent participating institutions include Peking University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Chongqing University, University of Hong Kong, Southeast University, Yonsei University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Kyungpook National University, Kwangwoon University, Sangmyung University, and Chonnam National University.
