On the morning of May 8, Dr. Don Tan, a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, IEEE Fellow, and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, visited the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) and held a roundtable discussion with young faculty members and postdoctoral researchers. The session was chaired by Professor Sun Kai, Associate Dean of the Department.

EEA young faculty members Wu Jinpeng, Ji Shiqi, Zhang Pengcheng, and several postdoctoral fellows attended the roundtable. They shared the latest research progress in areas such as power semiconductor devices and packaging, high-voltage and high-capacity power conversion, artificial intelligence in power electronics, high-performance power supplies for data centers, and advanced motor control systems. Dr. Don Tan spoke highly of these achievements and provided targeted suggestions and guidance on international career development for young scholars.

Guest Biography:

Dr. Don Tan received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1993. He has held positions including Assistant Researcher at the University of Victoria in Canada, Assistant Researcher at Caltech, Senior Design Engineer at QSC Audio Products, Senior Engineer at TRW S&EG, Senior Department Manager at NGST, and Distinguished Engineer at NGSS.

Dr. Tan currently serves as Vice President of Technical Activities for IEEE and Chair of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Council. In 2024, he was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, and in 2025, he was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Dr. Tan previously served as President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), a member of the IEEE Board of Directors, Chair of the IEEE PELS eGrid Steering Committee, Chair of IEEE Division II, Founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics, Chair of the APEC Conference, Vice President of Operations for PELS, and Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications. He also chaired the IEEE/ANSI Joint Working Group, where he led the development of IEEE/ANSI 1515/1573 standards.
