On November 4, the 10th Innovative Leading Engineering Doctoral Forum and the New Power System Symposium organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) of Tsinghua University took place at the Beijing Power Equipment Group (BPEG). The event focused on academic exchange, staying abreast of technological advancements, inspiring innovative thinking, and collectively planning the construction of new power systems and the future landscape of “green electricity”. Deng Chun, Vice Dean of the State Grid Jibei Electric Power Institute and Secretary-General of the Beijing Electrical Engineering Society, Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA, Zhu Guiping and Yu Zhanqing, Associate Deans of EEA, and Engineering Doctoral Responsibility Professor Gao Wensheng, along with mentors Chai Jianyun, Liu Weidong, Cheng Lin, Xie Xiaorong, Guo Qinglai, and 35 innovative leading engineering doctoral students from EEA, participated in the exchange. The forum activities were presided over by Professor Gao Wensheng.

At the forum

In his address, Kang Chongqing emphasized that the engineering doctorates from EEA are contributors and a driving force in China’s power industry. He encouraged them to not only excel in their doctoral thesis work but also actively contribute to the development of key areas related to “peak carbon” and “carbon neutrality”. Kang highlighted the three key terms, “innovation”, “leading” and “engineering”, and stressed the need to leverage the forum platform to enhance academic discussions. He emphasized the importance of improving the leadership and problem-solving capabilities of engineering doctoral students in practical work, reflecting their academic expertise in solving significant engineering issues and effectively serving the national energy and power construction. Kang also urged everyone to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and contribute to the green and low-carbon transformation of energy.

Mr. Kang delivered a speech

Zhu Guiping briefly reviewed the 10th Engineering Doctoral Forum, providing an overview of its organization, the current status of engineering doctoral training in EEA, and its contribution to quality research, achievements, and collaboration among units.

Ms Zhu delivered a speech

Yu Zhanqing delivered an expert presentation titled “DC Equipment Technology for New Power System Requirements”, covering topics such as the practical needs of the power system, power system architecture, AC/DC integration, flexible interconnection, and flexible reconstruction of urban power grids. He provided a comprehensive explanation of new technologies, including modular multilevel converters based on IGCT and DC energy-consuming devices for fault crossing.

Mr. Yu Zhanqing delivered an expert report

During the technical exchange session, several engineering doctoral students presented on various topics related to “Ultra-Large City Energy Ecology Services Network Research and Practice,” “The Construction of China’s Spot Power Market,” “Reflections and Practices on the Construction of a New Generation Dispatching Technology Support System,” “Research on New Power System Source-Grid-Load Optimization Scheduling Decision-Making Methods for Reliable Power Supply,” “Research Progress in Hybrid Aircraft Electric Propulsion and Energy Integrated Management Technology,” and “Design Progress of Dual-Frequency Coil for Supercharged C13 MRI Scanning.” The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the comprehensive implementation of the new development concept under the background of the “dual carbon” goal, coordination of development and security, the role of new energy in ensuring and increasing energy supply, and the promotion of the construction of a new power system.

Engineering doctoral candidates Liu Wentao, Liang Zhifeng, Liu Jinbo, Zhang Zhi, Xiao Wei, Hui Yannian, and Zhou Jie gave presentations

In the technical exchange segment, key technical personnel from the BPEG shared insights on topics such as the “Source-Grid-Load-Energy Storage Smart Industrial Park,” “Research and Development of Hydrogen Production Equipment by Water Electrolysis,” and “Development of a 300MW Compressed Air Energy Storage Turbo Expander.” They showcased achievements, discussed key research directions and main work in technical research and product development, and introduced project backgrounds, technical features, current development status, equipment development, implementation plans, system architecture, production capacity, engineering applications, and future development plans and strategic layouts.

Liu Chengzhu, Chen Yan, and Wang E from BPEG conducted technical presentations

Following the forum, participants visited BPEGs cultural corridor, Smart Industrial Park with integrated source-grid-load-energy storage, 8MW-level alkaline water electrolysis hydrogen production test platform, power electronics test hall, ultra-high-voltage reactor production workshop, and turbine and hydrogen electrolysis tank production workshop. The 10th Engineering Doctoral Forum organized by EEA achieved complete success.

The “Engineering Doctoral Forum” is an academic exchange platform organized by EEA, where engineering doctoral candidates can freely apply to host. The forum, held approximately every three months, encourages students to report on the progress of their papers and showcase research results. It aims to strengthen the management of the engineering doctoral training process, stimulate innovative thinking, and promote project collaboration. Since December 2020, EEA has successfully hosted ten sessions of the Engineering Doctoral Forum in Beijing, Changzhou, Qingdao, Chengdu (online), Fuzhou (online), Xining, Guangzhou (online), Shanghai, Yantai, and Beijing.
