On the afternoon of August 27, the Welcome Meeting for Undergraduate Freshmen Admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University in 2023 was successfully held in the Lecture Hall 3-217 of the West Main Building. The event was attended by the EEA Dean Kang Chongqing, Party Secretary Yu Xinjie, Deputy Party Secretary Wu Wenchuan, Zheng Zedong, Deputy Dean Yu Zhanqing, Assistant Dean Lin Jin of Wenyang College, Assistant Dean Hu Wei, Hou Nan, Party Office Director Li Qi, heads of various research institutes, leader Zhang Ling of the Student Group of Party Committee, class head teachers for new students, academic and administrative staff of EEA, and all EEAs undergraduate freshmen admitted in 2023. The welcome meeting was hosted by Liu Yilin, advisor of the class of new students.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dean Kang Chongqing delivered a speech. Starting from the department’s long history and excellent traditions, Mr. Kang introduced the significant contributions EEA has made to the country, the nation, and society since its establishment. He emphasized the academic breakthroughs and the nurturing of many outstanding leaders, academic experts, and talents for national development. Mr. Kang then introduced the overall structure of EEA, including the “Five Institutes and One Center” and the “One Department and Two Institutes”, and discussed the new opportunities and challenges faced by the department in building new type power systems centered on new energy sources in the context of the “dual carbon” transition. He also highlighted the department’s achievements in academic development and reforms in the new era. Finally, Mr. Kang expressed high expectations for the new students at Tsinghua, encouraging them to have great ambitions, uphold high moral standards, and take on significant responsibilities while continuously striving for progress in the unique environment of Tsinghua University.

Kang Chongqing delivered a speech

Admitted in 2003, and now as a teacher of the new class, Lin Jin, representing the faculty, gave a speech. Mr. Lin shared his personal experience from his time as a student at Tsinghua University and his career choices. He recounted his journey since entering his undergraduate study, describing how he continuously applied what he learned and envisioned in areas such as establishing and exploring volunteer management mechanisms at the university, as well as research in the fields of electrical systems and new energy. He delved deep into the fields of electrical engineering and the power industry, achieving numerous accomplishments. In the end, He made significant academic progress, earning several honors, including the Ministry of Education’s New Academic Talent Award for doctoral research and Tsinghua University’s Excellent Doctoral Thesis Award. Mr. Lin, by sharing his experiences of studying and working in the Department of Electrical Engineering over 20 years, conveyed how he initially had no knowledge of these fields but gradually came to understand the subjects and industries. He encouraged the new students to make the most use of Tsinghua University and EEAs excellent resources, actively engage with their mentors in Tsinghua, build a strong foundation, acquire genuine skills, and contribute to the future development of EEA and the power industry.

Mr. Lin Jin gave a speech

Su Bowen, the Chairman of the Student Union and an undergraduate student admitted in 2020, spoke on behalf of the senior students. He welcomed the new students on behalf of EEAs older siblings. He expressed the idea that Tsinghua University and EEA provide limitless opportunities for personal growth. Every student can choose their unique path in college based on their interests and strengths, excelling in academics while actively engaging in diverse extracurricular activities. He also shared his own experiences in the department, encouraging the new students to be daring, face challenges head-on, and grow into “Tsinghua EEAs Talents” capable of shouldering national and societal responsibilities.

Chen Weilong, on behalf of the new students admitted to EEA in 2023, expressed the most sincere gratitude to the mentors, family, and friends who have been with them, offering unwavering support. Drawing from their initial impressions of Tsinghua, they expressed their boundless anticipation for their future university life. Entering Tsinghua signifies not only the acquisition of knowledge and accomplishments but also the embrace of opportunities and challenges. The path of learning is not a smooth and straightforward journey; it may entail a series of shocks, challenges, and difficulties. However, by working together as a community and staying grounded, dreams can be transformed into reality. Chen Weilong passionately called upon fellow students to cultivate self-confidence, face difficulties with courage, and work together in EEA to craft their own brilliant chapter.

In conclusion, Party Secretary Yu Xinjie delivered a summary speech. Mr. Yu summarized the history of EEA from the perspectives of preserving tradition and fostering innovation. He noted that the department has established its unique cultural heritage over 91 years, with generations of EEA people continuing to strive and pass on their spirit and legacy. He also highlighted the department’s continuous growth and innovation, emphasizing the importance of staying true to the spirit of innovation and embracing new developments in the field, especially in the context of the “dual carbon” transition. Mr. Yu encouraged the students to manage themselves effectively, be proactive in their pursuit of knowledge, broaden their horizons, and integrate their personal development into the cultural heritage of EEA.
