On August 22, “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Application of Echelon Use of Power Batteries”, a major science and technology project of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, officially unveiled and underwent an acceptance review in Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner, Inner Mongolia. More than 60 attendees participated in the unveiling ceremony, including Dong Kai, a member of the Standing Committee and Deputy Banner Chief of Darhan-Muminggan Joint Banner, Baotou City, Naren Mandula, Party Secretary and Chairman of China Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd., Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University, a consulting expert group for the project, and project team members.

The project of “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Application of Echelon Use of Power Batteries” is a significant practical initiative in implementing Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region’s “Promotion of Science and Technology in Inner Mongolia” action plan and the major science and technology project plan for the year 2020 announced by the Autonomous Region’s Party Committee, Government, and Science and Technology Department. The project is led by Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd., with Researcher Ci Song from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University serving as the project leader. Over three years of research and development efforts, the project team has conducted theoretical and technical research in areas such as battery performance evaluation, sorting and grouping, integrated management and control, safe and economic operation, and business models. They have achieved significant technological breakthroughs and successfully constructed the world’s largest centralized 10MW/34MWh digital non-destructive echelon-use power battery energy storage station. The station has been in safe and stable operation for 15 months.

Secretary Naren Mandula delivered a welcome speech

Secretary Naren Mandula delivered a welcoming speech, expressing gratitude to leaders at all levels and experts for their care and support for the project. He pointed out that the “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Application of Echelon Use of Power Batteries” demonstration project relies on the deep expertise of Tsinghua University in the field of energy storage and fully leverages the industrial resource advantages of Huadian Inner Mongolia. In the future, it will use this project as a platform to focus on top-level design and collaborative research, jointly explore an open new energy development model with enterprises as the main body, market demand as the guide, and a combination of technological innovation and service support. This will accelerate breakthroughs in key new energy technologies and comprehensively promote the high-quality development of the autonomous region’s new energy industry.

Professor Kang Chongqing delivered a speech

Professor Kang Chongqing congratulated the project team on their achievements. He stated that the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University has maintained long-term research cooperation with Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd. in various fields, including energy and power, energy conservation, comprehensive energy-efficient utilization, and clean low-carbon engineering construction. The electrical engineering discipline at Tsinghua University is one of its key disciplines, and in recent years, the department has vigorously developed interdisciplinary research in information and energy. It has established an institutional layout of “one department, two institutes, one office, and one alliance”. The Department of Electrical Engineering will further actively leverage its research and disciplinary advantages, maintain its collaboration with Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd. in relevant areas, deepen exchanges and integration at multiple levels and in multiple fields, establish a comprehensive cooperation mechanism characterized by resource sharing, complementary advantages, and open integration, and promote the organic connection of the education chain, talent chain, industry chain, and innovation chain.

Project leader Researcher Ci Song announced the list of units and individuals that made outstanding contributions to the project. Awards were presented to outstanding contributing units and individuals, including Dong Kai, Naren Mandula, Kang Chongqing, Zhang Kai, and Ci Song. Naren Mandula and Kang Chongqing unveiled the demonstration project of the “Key Technologies for Large-Scale Application of Echelon Use of Power Batteries”.

Expert team surveyed the power station of the demonstration project

After the unveiling ceremony, the expert group visited the echelon use energy storage station, witnessed the overall operation of the station, listened to the project leader’s report on the construction and operation of the demonstration project, reviewed relevant materials, and, after questioning and thorough discussion, unanimously agreed that the echelon use centralized energy storage demonstration station had achieved key performance indicators, passed third-party testing and met the requirements for project approval. Thus, the demonstration project was successfully accepted.
