On the afternoon of July 21, the 2023 Summer School of China-Italy Laboratory on Advanced Manufacturing concluded with a ceremony held in Naples. This summer school was jointly organized by Tsinghua University, the University of Bergamo, and the University of Naples Federico II. Italian attendees at the closing ceremony included the presidents, professors, and local industry cluster leaders from the University of Bergamo and the University of Naples Federico II. The Chinese side dispatched a total of 13 graduate and doctoral students to Italy to participate in the summer school, including 10 from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and one each from the Departments of Precision Instruments, Mechanical Engineering, and Medicine, Tsinghua University.

The closing ceremony was hosted by Dr. Vincenzo Lipardi, Chairman of SPICY Corporation. Dr. Lipardi congratulated the successful conclusion of the 2023 China-Italy Summer School and expressed sincere gratitude for the contributions of professors and experts from various Chinese and Italian universities. He emphasized that the annual China-Italy Summer School, regularly held, is an important platform for academic and cultural exchange between students and teachers of the “China-Italy Laboratory on Advanced Manufacturing,” attracting graduate students from various advanced manufacturing fields, thereby fostering diverse cultural exchanges between China and Italy.

Speeches

The two coordinators of the CI-LAM Summer School, Mr. Wang Jian, Secretary-General of China Technology Automation Alliance, and Professor Gianluca Urso of the University of Bergamo, delivered speeches at the closing ceremony.

Mr. Wang Jian first congratulated the achievements of the summer school and commended the outstanding completion of learning tasks by the students. He expressed appreciation for the rich laboratory and corporate visit activities organized by the Italian side, which broadened everyone’s horizons and expanded their knowledge. On behalf of Tsinghua University, he thanked the Italian organizers and supporting units. Finally, Mr. Wang Jian, as a coordinator in the academic field at Tsinghua University and an entrepreneur in the industry, pledged to promote broader exchanges and cooperation between China and Italy in the field of advanced manufacturing.

Professor Gianluca Urso praised the successful organization of the summer school for five consecutive years and acknowledged the significant roles played by the three universities during the event. He expressed gratitude to the University of Naples Federico II, the host of this year’s summer school. Professor Urso highlighted that CI-LAM Summer School provides an international and specialized platform for exchange between Chinese and Italian students, promoting the exchange and cooperation of scientific talents between the two countries.

Sergio Cavalieri, President of the University of Bergamo, and Matteo Lorito, President of the University of Naples Federico II, summarized the summer school on behalf of their respective institutions.

President Sergio Cavalieri expressed his anticipation for next year’s summer school, which will be hosted in China. He regarded this summer school as a model of cooperation between the scientific and industrial sectors of China and Italy. He believed that projects like CI-LAM can build bridges between the two countries, promoting civilian exchanges and collaboration.

President Matteo Lorito welcomed everyone to Naples and the University of Naples Federico II. He described Naples as a charming city with a wild yet romantic atmosphere, steeped in history but full of vitality in the modern era. He believed that Beijing, the host city for the next summer school, would also offer a similar experience. He expressed his delight in everyone having a joyful week in Naples.

Valeria Fasiano, Minister of Innovation of the Campania Region, represented the Naples City Council in congratulating the successful organization of the summer school and expressed expectations for deeper research cooperation between China and Italy.

Finally, Pan Shi, the student representative from Tsinghua University, shared his experience of participating in the summer school in Italy. It was his first time traveling abroad and collaborating with students from different countries. He appreciated the opportunity to experience the culture and customs of Bergamo and Naples, and he found the summer school to be enriching and fulfilling. The school provided him with social and networking opportunities, and the carefully designed courses nurtured his creativity, broadened his horizons, and allowed him to delve into topics he was previously interested in but had not explored deeply.

Ceremony

At the end of the closing ceremony, Ms. Zhang Jindan and Ms. Chiara Romano jointly announced the list of students who received certificates for completing the fifth session of the China-Italy Summer School. A total of 36 students met the attendance requirements and were granted certificates. Both teachers presented certificates to each student and congratulated them on their excellent performance during the summer school. Members of the “China-Italy Laboratory on Advanced Manufacturing” expressed their commitment to further working together to make greater contributions to talent development and cutting-edge technology research and development in both countries.

CI-LAM Summer School

The China-Italy Joint Laboratory on Advanced Manufacturing (CI-LAM) is one of the earliest cooperative projects between China and Italy in the field of intelligent manufacturing/smart factories and digital manufacturing. CI-LAM aims to promote and strengthen cooperation between the two countries in talent development and cutting-edge technology research and development, including technology transfer and entrepreneurship incubation. Its vision is to become the most effective and successful cooperation bridge between China and Italy in the fields of advanced manufacturing and intelligent robotics. The “CI-LAM Summer School” is one of the important activities organized by CI-LAM for exchanges between Chinese and Italian students. The fifth session of CI-LAM Summer School in 2023 took place from July 12 to 27 in Bergamo and Naples, Italy, attracting 36 students from three universities. The summer school consisted of a theoretical course phase and corporate visits, with the theoretical course phase held at the University of Naples Federico II from July 17 to 21. After completing the theoretical courses, students visited well-known local companies in Naples, including 3EM, a PLC development company, 3DnA, a 3D printing company, and T&T, a company researching rail transit equipment.
