On June 29, the first 10,000-ton level new energy hydrogen production project in China, the Narisong Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Industry Demonstration Project in Zhungeer Banner, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia (referred to as the “Narisong Project”), held a hydrogen production ceremony, marking the successful production of the inaugural batch of “green hydrogen”. The green hydrogen technology team, composed of researchers from the Green Hydrogen Technology and Economics Sector and the Energy Storage, Direct Current, and Flexible Application Technology Research Sector at Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as the “Institute”), provided comprehensive engineering services throughout the entire process, from technical feasibility to project construction and hydrogen production, contributing to the success of the Narisong Project.

Hydrogen production ceremony

The Narisong Project represents Inner Mongolia’s first batch of integrated wind and solar hydrogen production demonstration projects. It primarily utilizes clean electricity generated by solar energy to electrolyze water into hydrogen and oxygen, exploring a pollution-free and zero-emission green hydrogen production model. The project addresses the challenges of balancing and accommodating electricity generated from high proportions of renewable energy sources within the grid. To tackle the difficulties of constructing the first 10,000-ton photovoltaic hydrogen system in China, the green hydrogen technology team of the Institute and the Institute of Science and Technology of China Three Gorges Corporation jointly formed an engineering team. This team provided in-depth technical support and consulting services throughout the project’s feasibility study, design review, procurement support, equipment supervision, engineering commissioning, and more. To ensure safe and efficient project advancement, the team conducted comprehensive research and optimization of the entire system process and technical solutions. This encompassed important equipment such as IGBT rectifiers, hydrogen production equipment, desalination systems, circulation water systems, purification systems, and DCS centralized control systems. The team organized and formulated commissioning plans for hydrogen production trials, significantly supporting the successful hydrogen production of the Narisong Project.

Project overview

The Narisong Photovoltaic Hydrogen Production Industry Demonstration Project is a joint venture between China Three Gorges New Energy Corporation and Man Shi Investment Group. The project utilizes reclaimed coal mining areas to build photovoltaic power stations, with an annual average electricity output of approximately 740 million kWh. Of this, 20% will be directly fed into the local grid, while the remaining 80% will be utilized for green hydrogen production. The project is equipped with 15 sets of 1,000 standard cubic meters per hour alkaline electrolytic hydrogen production equipment, producing approximately 10,000 tons of hydrogen and 80,000 tons of oxygen annually, primarily for applications in the chemical and transportation fields. The successful hydrogen production of the Narisong Project will accumulate valuable experience for the large-scale and commercial development of green hydrogen production in China, contributing to the improvement of the overall hydrogen “production-storage-transportation-use” industrial chain and making a positive contribution to the green development of Inner Mongolia’s economy and society.
