On May 10, the 10th meeting and the 2023 working meeting of the 11th Council of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE) were held in Beijing, where the list of additional fellows of CSEE for 2022 was announced, with 8 new fellows and 9 foreign fellows elected. Wu Weihan, Wu Wenchuan and Zeng Rong, professors of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University, were elected as fellows of CSEE.

Wu Weihan

Prof. Wu Weihan was born in Zhejiang Province, China in September 1931. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University as an undergraduate in 1953 and studied at the Moscow Power Institute from 1955 to 1959, where he received his associate doctorate degree. He has worked in EEA at Tsinghua University since 1953 and was promoted to associate professor in 1976 and professor in 1983. From 1984 to 1989, he was the dean of the EEA at Tsinghua University, during which he served as a director of CSEE.

Prof. Wu Weihan is one of the pioneers in the field of overvoltage research in China’s power systems and has made important contributions to the numerical analysis of electromagnetic transients, overvoltage protection and insulation fits. He is one of the first scholars in China to study the numerical calculation methods of electromagnetic transients in power systems, especially making pioneering contributions to the modeling of cables and GIS equipment, the study of impact corona characteristics and ferromagnetic resonance overvoltage. In the 1980s, overvoltage analysis models were not as mature as they are today and computer memory was limited. The model proposed by Prof. Wu Weihan and the code developed by him realized fast and accurate calculation of electromagnetic transients of actual power grids with limited hardware resources, and he took the lead in completing the research work on overvoltage calculation and insulation coordination for 110-500kV systems in China, solving the problem of overvoltage calculation for many power projects in China from 1980 to 1990, including the first 500kV compact power transmission line in China. His research results were granted the third prize of National Science and Technology Progress. In addition, he took the lead in developing the earliest 110-500kV composite jacket lightning arrester in China, promoting the application of lightning arrester in transmission line lightning protection, which has been proven to be the most effective method of lightning protection for transmission lines.

Wu Wenchuan

Wu Wenchuan is a long-appointed professor in EEA, Tsinghua University, and a Fellow of IEEE/IET. He is a recipient of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund and a leader in science and technology innovation under the National “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”. He was granted the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Electric Power Science and Technology, the first Award for Outstanding Young Chinese Electrical Engineer, and was selected for the New Century Excellent Talent Program of the Ministry of Education. He is mainly engaged in the research on large grid energy management and operation control, energy internet/active distribution network operation, scheduling and self-regulation control, and machine learning theory and its application in energy systems. He has presided over the development of new energy cluster control and grid optimization dispatching system, and active distribution grid operation regulation and reliability planning system, etc., which have been applied on a large scale in power grids at all levels. He won three first-class prizes at provincial and ministerial level as the first completer, one first-class prize (4th) of National Science and Technology Progress, and one second-class prize (3rd) of National Technology Invention Award.

Zeng Rong

Zeng Rong is a professor and doctoral supervisor in EEA, Tsinghua University, a recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, and a leader of science and technology innovation in the National “Ten Thousand Talents Plan”.

Fellowship is the highest academic honor for a member in the Society. In order to honor the experts and scholars who have made significant contributions and achievements in the field of electrical engineering science and technology, CSEE started to elect the Fellowship from 2011, and 156 people have been elected as Fellows. In order to attract and recognize foreign experts who have made outstanding achievements in the field of electrical engineering science and technology, CSEE started to elect foreign fellows from 2018, and 39 people have been elected as Foreign Fellows.
