On May 30, the China Association for Science and Technology series books for “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality were officially published at the event of 2022 National Science and Technology Workers Day. Wan Gang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, made a general preface for the series books. The first series of books are “Introduction to New-Type Power System”, “Introduction to Clean Energy and Smart Energy” and “Introduction to Clean and Low-carbon Transition of Coal”.

Message of recommendation from Shu Yinbiao, Editor-in-Chief of “Introduction to New-Type Power Systems”

Among the three books, the “Introduction to New-Type Power System” is edited by Shu Yinbiao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Secretary of the Party Group and Chairman of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., Chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission, and Chairman of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering. Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) of Tsinghua University serves as the executive editor. Gao Feng, Vice President of the Energy Internet Innovation Research Institute, Tsinghua University, is one of the executive editor-in-chief of the Introduction to Clean Energy and Smart Energy.

Series Books for “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality

The “Introduction to New-Type Power System” will help the cultivation of “dual-carbon” talents, lead the majority of scientific and technological workers to jointly promote the technological innovation and generalized application of the new type power system, and contribute to the implementation of the strategy of strengthening the country with talents and the realization of the “dual-carbon” goal.

On September 22, 2020, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced at the general debate of the 75th United Nations General Assembly: “China will scale up its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions by adopting more vigorous policies and measures. We aim to have CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.” In March 2021, President Xi Jinping pointed out at the ninth meeting of the Central Finance and Economics Commission, “We must focus on improving utilization efficiency, take alternative actions with renewable energy, deepen power system reform, and build a new-type power system with new energy as the main body”. Building a new-type power system and promoting the decarbonization of the power sector is the only way to promote clean and low-carbon transformation of energy and achieve the goal of “dual-carbon”.

In order to fully implement the relevant deployment of the Party Central Committee and the State Council on the “dual-carbon” work and the spirit of President Xi Jinping’s important speech at the Central Talent Work Conference, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, in accordance with the deployment of the China Association for Science and Technology, began in December 2021 to organize experts to compile the dual-carbon series books, assist in the education and training of “dual-carbon related professional teachers in colleges and universities, support the construction of “dual-carbon related majors and personnel training, serve the overall situation of the “dual-carbon” work of the party and the country, promote high-quality economic and social development, and contribute to the realization of the “dual-carbon” goal as scheduled. The main readers of this book include, but are not limited to: teachers and students of “dual-carbon” related majors in colleges and universities, directors of carbon neutrality future technology colleges and exemplary energy colleges, etc.

The book is divided into 8 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the era background and strategic significance of the “dual-carbon” goal, the core connotation and basic characteristics of the new-type power system, as well as changes compared with the traditional power system, and analyzes the technical structure of “source, grid, load, storage, and common key supports”. Chapter 2 introduces the evolution path and construction measures of the new-type power system, and clarifies the low-carbon transformation path of the power system. Chapter 3 introduces clean and low-carbon energy production technologies in the new-type power system. Chapter 4 introduces grid technologies in the new-type power systems. Chapter 5 introduces the efficient energy utilization technologies on the load side in the new-type power system. Chapter 6 focuses on efficient energy storage in the new-type power system. Chapter 7 introduces the application of common key supporting technologies such as new electrical materials, devices, power grid digitization, high-performance simulation calculation and solution, power Beidou, and power network carbon flow analysis in the new-type power system. Chapter 8 introduces the market mechanism suitable for the new-type power system.

The editor-in-chief of this book is Shu Yinbiao, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, secretary of the Party Group and chairman of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission, and chairman of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering. The executive editor is Kang Chongqing, dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics of Tsinghua University. The main framework and part of the content of this book refer to the sub-topic “3. Research on the Implementation Path of Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality in the Electric Power Industry” of the major consulting project of the Chinese Academy of Engineering “Research on Carbon Neutrality Strategy and Path in China”, and the achievement of Technical Research Report on New-type Power System” completed by Tsinghua University under the authorization of the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Chapter 1 was mainly written by Dai Jing of Tsinghua University, and Xia Peng, Yuan Bo, and Wang Xiaochen of State Grid Energy Research Institute Co., Ltd.; Chapter 2 was mainly written by Lu Gang, Yuan Bo, Xia Peng, and Wang Xiaochen of State Grid Energy Research Institute Co., Ltd.; Chapter 3 was mainly written by Dai Jing of Tsinghua University; Chapter 4 was mainly written by Wang Xiaochen, Yuan Bo and Xia Peng of State Grid Energy Research Institute Co., Ltd.; Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 were mainly written by Fang Yujuan of Tsinghua University; Chapter 7 was mainly written by Du Ershun of Tsinghua University; Chapter 8 was co-written by Guo Hongye of Tsinghua University. Liu Jianming, Li Wufeng, He Yongjun, and Chen Yufei of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering also deeply participated in the discussions and revisions for this book. In addition, experts and leaders including Qiu Feng and Luo Shuhan of the High-tech Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Liu Jia and Zhang Zhaohua of the Industrial Development Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Li Qingfeng, Lu Zhengang, Pei Zheyi, Zhu Jianjun, Zang Zhibin of the State Grid, Xu Shukai and Li Peng of China Southern Power Grid, Liu Shiyu of the General Institute of Electric Power Planning and Design, Xiao Jinyu of the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization, Zhou Chaoyang of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., Sun Changping of China Three Gorges Corporation, Zhao Jian of TBEA, Chang Yao of Huawei Digital Energy Co., Ltd., An Zhongxun of Shanghai Aowei Technology Development Co., Ltd., Bi Tianshu and Wang Xiaojian of North China Electric Power University, Jia Hongjie of Tianjin University, Dong Xuzhu of Wuhan University, Bie Chaohong of Xi'an Jiaotong University, He Zhengyou of Southwest Jiaotong University, Chen Haosen of Beijing Institute of Technology, Wu Yuting of Beijing University of Technology, Song Wenji of CAS Guangzhou Institute of Energy Research, Xie Feng of State Grid Xinyuan Holdings Co., Ltd. also participated in the compilation of some chapters of this book, and I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to them!

As limited by authors knowledge and skills, this book inevitably has deficiencies, for which experts and readers are welcome to correct.
