Photo 1: Opening ceremony of the symposium

The 5th IEEE Symposium on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification was held in Shanghai from May 14 to 15, 2021. It focuses on the fields of ground transportation engineering, including transportation and energy integration technology, new generation power electronics technology, new motor technology, traction power supply and electric drive technology, energy storage science and technology in the transportation engineering field of high-speed rail and urban rail transit, maglev trains, and electric vehicles, and discusses the development of electrified transportation technology in digitalization and intelligentization to promote green transportation technology centered at electrified transportation.

The symposium was co-hosted by the Transportation Electrification Committee of the China Power Supply Society, Tongji University, CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, and Tsinghua University. Chen Qingquan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Professor of the University of Hong Kong, and Academician Zhong Zhihua, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, jointly served as the honorary chairman of the symposium. Professor Chen Xiaohong, Dean of the Institute of Railway and Urban Rail Transit of Tongji University, and Professor Kang Jinsong, Executive Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Maglev Technology Railway Industry, jointly served as the chairman of the symposium. More than 500 experts and scholars, includingAn Lusheng, Member and Deputy Director of the Party Leadership Group of the National Railway Administration, Academician Zhong Zhihua, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen Qingquan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Professor of the University of Hong Kong, Ding Rongjun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Scientist of CRRC, and Professor Tang Tianhao, Vice Chairman of the China Power Supply Society, Zhang Lei, Secretary General of the China Power Supply Society, Professor Li Yongdong, Director of the Transportation Electrification Committee of China Power Supply Society, Li Feng, Deputy District Mayor of Jiading District, Shanghai, and Professor Tong Xiaohua, Vice President of Tongji University, attended the forum. The opening ceremony of the symposium was presided over by Professor Chen Xiaohong, Dean of the Institute of Railway and Urban Rail Transit of Tongji University.

Entrusted by Professor Xu Dehong, Chairman of the China Power Supply Society, Tang Tianhao delivered a speech on behalf of the China Power Supply Society. He said that the Symposium on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification has become an influential platform for exchanges in the industry, which proves that the future transportation electrification is promising. Looking forward to the future, the "dual carbon" goal will profoundly change our production methods and lifestyle. New energy and transportation electrification are the main orientation for achieving the "dual carbon" goal.

Industrial leader, academicians and experts, including An Lusheng, Deputy Director of National Railway Administration, Academician Zhong Zhihua, Deputy Dean of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (online), Academician Chen Qingquan, Honorary Professor of the University of Hong Kong (online), Academician Ding Rongjun, Chief Scientist of CRRC, Tsinghua Professor Li Yongdong, Director of the Transportation Electrification Committee of China Power Supply Society, Professor Wu Guangning of Southwest Jiaotong University, Professor Xu Guoqing of Shanghai University, Professor Lin Guobin of Tongji University, Gong Jun, Chairman of the National Electric Vehicle Electric Drive System Whole Industry Chain Technology Innovation Alliance, Wu Donghua, Deputy Chief Engineering of CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., Song Gaosheng, Director of the Technology Center of Mitsubishi Electric Semiconductor Greater China, and Fu Junyin, General Manager of Shenzhen Bronze Technology Co., Ltd., gave keynote speeches successively. Topics include "Insist on the Core Position of Innovation and Promote the High-quality Development of Railways", "Four-network and Four-flow Integration Technology in Transportation Electrification", "Smart Train Transportation System and Its Engineering Practice", "Innovation and Development of Rail Transportation Equipment Technology", "Development and Trends of High-speed Maglev Technology", "Development of High-speed Maglev Transportation System at a Speed of 600 km/h", “Key Technologies for High-speed Train High-power Pantograph Network Current Collection", "Power Semiconductor Solutions for Rail Traction and Electric Vehicles", "Vehicle Electric Drive System State Perception and Health Management Technology", "Silicon Carbide Device Gate Drive Technology Application in Rail Transit". The symposium also interpreted the "Energy-saving and New Energy Vehicle Technology Roadmap 2.0", the electric drive assembly system and the Chinese transportation electrification industry and technology development roadmap, and made an in-depth technical outlook on batteries, power electronic converters, and motors in transportation electrification. . Li Yongdong, Feng Jianghua, Qu Ronghai, Zheng Zedong, and Kang Jinsong respectively presided over the keynote speeches of the symposium.

Experts and scholars from domestic universities, research institutions and enterprises conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on key technologies, development trends, industry innovations and policy recommendations in transportation electrification. In the early stage of the symposium, the participants also went to the Jiading campus of Tongji University to visit major scientific research platforms such as the comprehensive test line for high-speed maglev trains, the comprehensive test line for rail transit vehicles, and the wind tunnel center for ground vehicles. The Transportation Electrification Committee of China Power Supply Society held the 2021 full committee meeting in the evening. Director Li Yongdong, Deputer Director Zheng Zedong, Li Mingyong and other members and some representatives attended the meeting and reviewed the preparation work, budget, revenue and expenditure of the 5th IEEE Symposium on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification.

The symposium set up 8 thematic sub-forums, and 40 experts and scholars from high-level research institutes and enterprises, including Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Harbin Institute of Technology, China Railway Group, CRRC, CSSC and Shanghai Shentong, etc., gave techincal reports on 8 topics including transportation and energy integration, rail transit traction and transmission, electric vehicle driving and charging, linear motors and maglev technologies, new electrified transportation technologies, new motor technologies, new generation power electronic devices, energy storage science and technology. As the first interdisciplinary, cross and open symposium in the field of electrified transportation in China, the Symposium on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification has received positive responses from universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises at home and abroad, and highly recognized by IEEE. It is currently the only open academic symposium of IEEE on transportation electrification. The 6th Symposium on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification will be hosted by the School of Electrical Engineering of Southeast University in 2022.
