On the afternoon of November 23, 2019, a seminar of "Tsinghua University - Imperial College London Joint Research Centre on Smart Power and Energy Systems" (hereinafter referred to as the Research Centre) was held in the West Main Building of Tsinghua University. Professor Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA, Tsinghua University and Director of the Research Centre, presided over the meeting. Professor Goran Siqibeck, Professor Tim Green, Professor Richard Green and Assistant Professor Teng Fei of Imperial College London, Associate Professor and Deputy Dean Lu Zongxiang, Associate Professor and Vice Secretary Zheng Zedong of the CPC committee, Associate Professor Sun Kai and Associate Professor Zhang Ning of EEA, Tsinghua University participated in the seminar.

Tsinghua University - Imperial College London Joint Research Centre on Smart Power and Energy Systems was established on March 24, 2019 under the witness of Xue Qikun, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Ma Jun, Director of the Division of Overseas Projects of the Research Institute, et al., aiming to unite scholars from Tsinghua University and Imperial College London to study the technological, economic and social development and transformation paths of future smart and sustainable power and energy systems, as well as the frontier and basic issues in the low-carbon and clean transformation of smart power and energy systems. The director of the Joint Research Centre is Professor Kang Chongqing and Professor Goran Strbac, and the deputy directors are Associate Professor Zhang Ning and Assistant Professor Teng Fei.

The seminar reviewed the work since the Joint Research Centre was established. In March this year, teachers and students of Tsinghua University visited Imperial College London, held the establishment ceremony of the Joint Research Centre, and the launching meeting of the China-EU Cooperative Research Project on Urban Energy Systems. In June this year, Professor Kang Chongqing visited Imperial College London and discussed issues related to the Joint Research Centre; Professor Tim Green of Imperial College London visited Tsinghua University and was hired as an outstanding visiting professor of Tsinghua University. In July this year, graduate students from Tsinghua University went to the Imperial College London and attended the Energy Summit for International Students. In August this year, the two sides discussed the application for joint projects at the General Meeting of IEEE PES. Associate Professor Zhong Haiwang of Tsinghua University presided over a symposium entitled "Smart Building Technology for the Future Smart Grid", at which Professor Goran Strbac of Imperial College made a special report. In November this year, Associated Professor Sun Kai of Tsinghua University invited Yunjie Gu, a postdoctoral researcher of Imperial College London, to give a speech at the IEEE eGrid Conference; at the IEEE Sustainable Power & Energy Conference (iSPEC), the two sides jointly held a symposium entitled "Sustainable Development of Urban Energy from a Social and Economic Perspective". In addition, a doctoral student Huang Wujing was sent from Tsinghua University to Imperial College London for exchange study, and Associate Professor Zhang Ning will visit Imperial College London again in December this year. The two sides have jointly published a series of papers through cooperative research.

After that, the two sides discussed various topics on how to promote the development of the Joint Research Centre, their respective research plans and how to further strengthen cooperation and exchanges, etc. The participating teachers of Tsinghua University and Imperial College London made speeches in turn.

The successful convening of this seminar plays an important role in promoting the future development of the Joint Research Centre for Smart Power and Energy Systems of Tsinghua University and Imperial College London. As Tsinghua University and Imperial College London are complementary in smart power and energy system research, and the Joint Research Centre will further utilize the advantages of both sides, learn from each other, complement each other, and promote research in related fields.
