The 2018 Tsinghua University Seminar on Global Scientific Research Strategic Partners was held on Oct. 18, 2018. The Seminar was sponsored by the Office of Scientific R&D of Tsinghua University, organized by the Research Institute of Tsinghua University in Shenzhen, the Graduate School in Shenzhen Tsinghua University, and Tusinceie Park, and strongly supported by Shenzhen Longgang District Government and Shenzhen Municipal Government. Prof. Yang Bin, Academic Dean and vice President of Tsinghua University, attended the Seminar and made a speech, stating that Tsinghua University will step by step construct the cross-cultural, cross-regional and interdisciplinary networks among teachers and platforms of high-level world universities in its building of the world-class university, so as to adapt and lead the high interconnection and share of global information, resources and talents, promote universities’ cross-bound cooperation, innovation and mutual development. Based on such ideas, Tsinghua University started officially the Scientific Research Cooperation Projects for Global Universities in 2016, and carried out the cooperation of 48 projects with five universities in four countries. At the meeting, Tsinghua University signed the strategic partner agreements with University of Hong Kong and Imperial College London UK respectively. Prof. Kang Chongqing, Director of Department of Electrical Engineering, signed the agreements on the behalf of Tsinghua University with Prof. Tim Green, Member of Royal Academy of Engineering and the Imperial College London UK on the behalf of his college. Both sides carried out the deep discussion and exchanges on the form and contents of the future cooperation. At the same time, Tsinghua University renewed the Phase-II strategic cooperation agreements with University of New South Wales (UNSW) Australia, University of Alberta Canada, and the Petersburg & Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia, respectively.

Prof. Xiao Xi, deputy Director of Department of Electrical Engineering, and associate Prof. Sun Kai, Director of Power Electronics & Motor System Institute, attended the Seminar. Prof. Xiao Xi reported the progress in the Industrial Robot Modeling Analysis and Intelligent Control Automation System, a cooperative project with the Petersburg & Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Russia. Associate Prof. Sun Kai gave the report on the research achievements of the Basic Theory and Key Technology for Mid-Voltage AC/DC Mixed Grids—A cooperative project with University of Alberta, and the research progress in the Multi-electrical SmartCity and Application of Advanced Electrical Converters—A cooperative project with University of New South Wales (UNSW). In recent three years, Faculties in Department of Electrical Engineering actively carried out high-level deep cooperation by taking full advantage of the Tsinghua’s platform—Strategic Scientific Research Projects for Global Universities, not only completing the 14 person times of exchange visits, five bilateral seminars and three person times of doctoral student exchanges, but also making the fruitful achievements in cooperative researches. They jointly published four papers in the top international disciplinary journal—IEEE Transactions and six papers at some international conferences. The academic influence of both sides can be improved greatly by above close cooperation in international academic circles.
