Course Description:

     The course is about the fundamentals of microprocessor based protective relaying and control technology. It covers the scale of hardware designs of the relay, the protective algorithms programming, and the applications of anti-interferences measures. Its main concerns are the basic configurations and basic principles in practical micro-processor based relays.

Course Objectives and Outcomes:

1.Students should skillfully master the methods for fault analysis and the operations of various kinds’ relays. [1, 2]

2.Students are in touch with the basic protection elements, such as current protection, distance protection, current difference protection. [10]

3.Students are familiar with a certain number of terminologies, which will be used repeatedly in the successive learning and studying. [5]

4.Students are familiar with various intuitive ideas in electrical engineering, e.g. equivalent transform perspective, abstract perspective, and engineering approximation perspective [3, 5, 11]

2.The fundamentals of the excitation regulator operations.

3.The basic principles of security and stability control system.

4.The configurations of microprocessor based protections and automatic devices.

5.The filtering algorithm applied in relay.

6.The analysis of typical devices of relays.

7.Devices of microprocessor based excitation regulator.

8.Devices of microprocessor based security and stability control system.

9.The anti-interferences experiments to relay and automatic devices.

Project(s):

Settings and Operations of Microprocessor based Basic protective relay

 Understand the protection algorithms in relay, Input the setting of III zones current protections, and trip the fault simulated by protection simulator, e.g. Omicrons

Tests to relays in physical or digital real-time dynamic simulation (RTDS) Labs

 Utilize the real ways of relay tests in practical power systems to understand and operate the whole test steps to digital distance relays. The close-loop simulation and tests technology is also learned in this experiment.

       Final exam score, 80 points.
