Course Description:

 The course is about the fundamental and application of power apparatus. It covers the common phenomena and principles of various power apparatus, such as the effect of heavy and weak current, the making and breaking of the circuit. The main contents include: the working conditions and parameters of typical power apparatus, electrodynamic force, heating, electrical contact, electric arc, circuit making and breaking, test, typical power apparatus.

Course Objectives and Outcomes:

1.Students should master the fundamental knowledge, such as design, development, using and operation, of power apparatus. [1, 3,11]

2. Students are familiar with the current power apparatus used in the power system and their development trend. [6]

3. Students should know the field requirements of power apparatus application. [1,11]

4.Students should have the ability to analyze the field phenomena of power apparatus, such as the overvoltage, protection. [5]

Course Topics:

1.Introduction of power apparatus, the basic knowledge of high voltage circuit breaker.

2.Two calculation method of electrodynamic force. The electrodynamic force between two straight conductor in the same plane.

3.The influence of the cross section shape of conductor to electrodynamic force. Alternating-current electrodynamic force. Short circuit electrodynamic force.

4.Temperature rise permitted, heat generation, adiabatic temperature rise and heat transfer.

5. Long term heating calculation, the temperature rise process of heating object.

6.Classification and requirement of electrical contact, contact resistance and its influence factors, formula of electrical contact, the electrical wear of the contact.

7.Electric arc phenomena, the physical process and characteristics of electric arc, the burning and extinguishing of DC arc.

8. The extinguishing of AC arc, the dynamic mathematic model of arc in the switchgear

9.Short circuit current’s breaking and making by high voltage circuit breaker. Recovery voltage, transient recovery voltage. Short line fault, step fault, developmental fault, parallel breaking.

10.Test of short circuit current’s breaking and making by high voltage circuit breaker.

11. Load current’s breaking and making by high voltage circuit breaker. Closing and opening no-load transmission line and capacitor bank, opening no-load transformer and induction motor.

12. Oil circuit breaker. Bulk oil and minimum oil circuit breaker, interrupter, pressure process.

13. Vacuum circuit breaker. Break down of vacuum gap, vacuum arc, the extinguishing of AC vacuum arc.

14. The contact of vacuum switchgear, the construction of vacuum interrupter, suppression of switching overvoltage.

15.SF6 circuit breaker. Electric arc inside SF6 gas, gas blowing characteristic, two pressure and single pressure SF6 circuit breaker.
