Course Description:

The course is about the fundamentals of gas discharge, the theory of electric breakdown in liquids and solids, the analysis methods for discharge process, the studies on overvoltage, the key terminologies of high voltage engineering, the theoretical basis of high-voltage testing technology, and substantial ideas as electrical engineers. It covers theoretical analysis and testing method of high-voltage, including engineering experience and some empirical formulas.

Course Objectives and Outcomes:

1.Students should skillfully master the methods for analyzing various discharges, which include the gas, liquid and solid discharge. [1]

2.Students are in touch with the experiment equipment, such as power source and voltage regulator. [2]

3.Students should get the general idea about a certain number of terminologies, which will be used repeatedly in the successive learning and studying. [9,10]

4.Students are familiar with various intuitive ideas in electrical engineering, e.g. engineering approximation perspective. [11]

Course Topics:

1.Introduction to the physical process of the gas discharge. The concept of discharge, the electron collision ionization theory of Townsend discharge, Paschens law, theory of streamer discharge and leader discharge.

2.The air insulation characteristics under different voltage forms. The concept of non-uniform electric field, uniform electric field, ac voltage, dc voltage, lightning impulse voltage and switching impulse voltage.

3.Study on the external insulation and the surface discharge. Introduction to the impact factors of the surface discharge.

4.The electrical properties of liquid dielectrics and solid dielectrics. The analysis on the Electrical Performance of the liquid dielectrics and solid dielectrics.

5.The examination and diagnoses of insulation. The concept of the examination and diagnoses in the insulation equipment, the concept of insulation resistance, leakage current, dielectric loss, partial discharge (PD) and their measuring methods.

6.Ac and dc high voltage testing equipment.

7.Ac and dc high voltage test and measuring technique.

8.The generation of high-voltage impulse and electric current impulse.

9.High-voltage impulse test and measuring technique.

10.The wave process of transmission line. The concept of wave impedance, refracted wave and reflected wave. 

11.The lightning impulse voltage and its protection measures.

12.The switching over voltage and its protection measures.

Air Discharge Under the High Voltage

 Understand the concept of non-uniform field and uniform field, connect the electric circuit, observe the air discharge under the different electric field and use the results of the experiment to analyze the influential factors.

Performance Test of the Solid Dielectric

 Use knowledge learned in dielectric analysis and the testing measures to design and test the surface resistivity and the volume resistivity of the solid dielectric, take a test in the dielectric constant. 

Corona Discharge and Test Method

 Use knowledge learned in corona discharge and testing measures to design and test the corona onset voltage and know the characteristics of corona discharge deeply.

Measurement of Partial Discharge

    Know the principle of partial discharge well, master the testing measures to analyze the relationship of virtual partial discharging capacity and the insulation level.

Course Assessment:

  Homework measures, 10 points.

  High-voltage test, 16 points.

  The project report 24 points.

  Final exam score, 50 points.
